Data Shortcuts and surface reference

For most of my design projects I create the existing surface within my existing base file. From there I use data shortcuts for other files (like the site plan, grading, utility, landscaping, etc.). In my grading base, before I begin creating my proposed finish grade surface, I usually create a reference from the data shortcut of the Existing Ground Surface.

In every application of this process, I have not had any issues, and I'm able to tell my proposed surface to either project to the existing surface along my end area conditions, or even to drape my boundary lines to the existing surface once it is referenced into the drawing.

In this particular file, when I try to create the reference of the surface from the data shortcut, it creates the reference surface, but it is offset from the original surface file. I'm not sure why it does not match up with the surface it is referencing, and I don't know how to solve this issue.

I've never run into a situation where the reference created from the data shortcut, doesn't line up with the data shortcut.

Please help.

Have you tried the following:

Open the drawing with the original surface in it and check that it is accurate, save that file and close it

Go into your drawing and synchronize the reference

Match??

Also try saving the file with a new name and create a new data reference.

I have also experienced some odd glitches with the grading feature where instead on linking properly to the surface it goes beyond it or a little short... usually I open a new drawing and copy in the pertinent information, make my grading surface and then save and reference it back into the design drawing (promoted) and go from there.

Good luck.

Perhaps try the BASE command on all drawings.

It should be 0,0,0

Base does nothing for you when it comes to data references.  Give it a shot.

Before you try and trouble shoot data shortcuts, I'd suggest opening the opening everying read only and then temporarily copying in the native surface, using base point 0,0, and see if it comes in properly or not. If it still doesn't come in properly, then it's probably not a DS issue. Side note, make sure your UCS is world and units and cordinate systems line up properly between the files before copying.

For some reason the BASE of the Existing Base Map was not set to 0,0,0 (it's a save as from the survey file). So that was the reason for the shift when creating the reference. I've corrected and just need to go through and move all the linework in my other base maps to match the adjustment.

Thanks again Bill!

I had this problem and was able to fix it by checking my units in each drawing. One was "feet" and one was "unitless". Once they were all unitless the data linked surface lined up with other linework xref'd in.
