Cut and Fill Volumes

I have a final surface and an existing surface. There is a 8" base course for the road and surrounding areas. I did a cut and fill for my surfaces but now I need to do the same thing without the 8" base course. How do I go about that?

Is your final surface defined by grading or a corridor?

This is a perennial problem with Civil 3D - can be easy if you have a corridor but trickier if you haven't.

There are a few techniques available including a Differential dynamic TIN (google it or search the forums) or you can compute the area, multiply by the thickness to derive a volume and add alegebraically to the net volume you have calculated - the net volume is cut minus fill and could be +ve or -ve.

If you built the assembly from OOTB subs then you should be able to create a Datum surface for the corridor.  Datum is usually the underside of all road structure, so that would exclude your base gravel.

Create a new corridor surface, add Datum links as breaklines, and make sure the Bottom option is used for overhangs.
