cross section elevation range

i've got some cross sections i've created for a road project we're doing. i've got my sections created using the 'user specified' to follow a section and a set height which under most conditions works great but for this road i've got 2 different surfaces to deal with. ideally the sections follow the existing surface but when i have 2 surfaces i can only pick one to follow. the sections disappear once they leave the one surface and go to the next surface. i thought maybe i could use my proposed section but once it leaves that proposed corridor the sections disappear. i would use the automatic setting but then the section views are all different heights. is there a way to fix this?

I think you could paste Surface #2 into Surface #1 and just have the one existing surface to use...?

it may come down to that. this project was started back in 2012 when my computer was significantly slower. the 2 surfaces were from 2 different survey companies so i chose to keep them separate to help speed things along.
