Creating Flowline Profiles

So I have to create flowline profiles of the curbs for a municipality and I'm not sure the best way of going about it is.

 

For the past few years I have done some street widenings but no full blown street designs. What I have done is 'trick' C3D into thinking I was designing and controlling the curbs with the lip. I have done this by creating a curb assembly and moving (autocad move) the curb so the flowline of the curb is at the design point, thus controlling the curb with the flowline. It's a pain in the a$$ but I can't figure out how else to do it.

 

I just did a design for an arterial roadway and that municipality requires CL, right FL and left FL profiles. I did it all with the CL profile and my templates and created my FL alignments and did a 'best fit' profile with a superimposed surface profile from the corridor surface. It just seems crazy to have to do it this way.

 

Any suggestions?

If the curb is a simple shape then you should be able to create your own sub using a closed polyline.  That would allow you to set the attachment point at the gutter, and then attach the other parts of the design to it.

 

Need more information.  Are you using a center baseline, with an offset alignment and profile, or some other method to lay this out?

I've done a lot of this for a municipality which requires top of curb profiles shown on the construction plan rather than the centerline Profile.

 

Unless it's a very complicated street, start by designing it using centerline and then copy the centerline using the "Copy Profile" command on Profile layout Tools dialog and name it flowline etc.

 

Then use the "Raise/Lower PVI's" command on the Profile layout Tools dialog to lower profile to the flowline elevation.

 

When there's widening, superelevation etc. then the profiles need additional edits but this is an easy way to get started if you're referring to "mainline" profiles.

 

If the Left & Right are typical I'll typically only create one flowline profile per street.

 

The 3rd party Sincpac C3D has a nice command for this, DLProfiles which dynamically links profiles so when centerline changes, so do the flowlines.

A very handy tool for the above workflow.

for thecurb I use the Urbanc&G witht the following setting for a 6 inch reveal and toatl depth of 18"

sub base depth = 0

subbase ext= 0

A=1.0

B=0.00001

C=0.00001

D=0.50

E=0.50

F=0.48

G=1.5

and the attachment point is at the flow line

 

For the profiles

I know what you want. For me, if is a subdivision street with no crazy curvature and rhe minimum slope are not pushing 0.5 or owere, I create Leop & reop right in the cl profile view. If the curve are grand and the slopes dicey I make separate alignments and profiles then SI.

 

in each case I create a data band for cl leop and reop and show design elevation every 25 feet or so in a matrix

Hi Steve,

I'm used a center baseline for the template and separate alignments for the EOP's and the median TBC's. The design works great, it's just that I need to show profiles for the left and right FL's.

Now I have another project where they want the left and right FL profiles but not the CL. Just trying to find the easiest way for the engineer to do it. I was kind of thinking of using an alignment along the FL and doing an offset alignment for the EOP/lip but it isn't constant.

Can the Urban C&G be controlled vertically and horizontally by the TBC?

I've never tried to make a custom sub-assembly, are they hard to make?

sounds like it can inserts at gutter edge or back of curb. see help

It is easier than it sounds; just draw your shape and define. The you can pick the tc face of curb as the insert point

You can also build a closed shape using the OOTB LinkMulti subassembly.  There are advantages to both methods - LinkMulti allows you to edit the geometry, but you have less control over the codes.

How did we go from Flow Line to Top of Curb Profile? I missed something. I understand why design the TC, I just totaly missed it in this thread where the TC want came from? I thought we were talking about flow line. I guess it could be differences in locale - for me flow line is the gutter / bottom of curb

Joe, we have some municipalities that want TBC as the design profile, while others accept a CL design and others want FL. All in one state. Or cities are as crazy as our weather here in CO. What I'm trying to get to is a good way to vertically control the curb by something other than the lip of the gutter. I would really prefer the curb be one sub-assembly. Of course we are talking an Autodesk product so what I would like/want does not really matter.

Okay, I guess I'm still not getting it.

 

I have create a 2 part curb with the gutter being an UrbanSidewalk Subassembly and the curb part being a UrbanCurbGutterGeneral. You'll see that the assembly looks like. But when I go into the corridor targets nothing shows up for me to target. I'm seriously confused.

 

I think what I will do is

1. create the CL profile and corridor from that.

2. copy the profile to Right FL and Left FL and edit them how they need to be. All in the CL Profile view.

3. then copy those FL's and raise/lower them to adjust for the EOP/Lip and target those.

4. the FL profiles will be the ones that are data shortcut and used in the P&P sheets.

 

I hope this works...

 

The Sincpac 3D looks interesting, I'm going to have to try that to link the FL and EOP profiles.

Here is my quick and dirty example. The assembly uses a generic link from centerline out to the curb flowline. This sub is targeted to the offset alignment/profile for width and elevation. I used LinkMulti for the curb because it was quicker to build, and attached the lane and the sidewalk to that. The lane is targeted back to the centerline for width and elevation. Using this method you have full control over the location and elevation of the curbs. Steve
