Create Points Questions

Hi,

Please see attached PNG file.

In the Create Points Toolbar, Expand the Create Points Dialog, under Points Creation > Prompt for Descriptions, in the value field what is the difference between Automatic and Automatic-Object?

Under the same Points Creation heading, in the value field for Prompt for Point Names, would you set this to Automatic or Manual if you wanted to include alpha characters in the point number? How would Automatic work? Would a newly-created point also receive a point number, making two points?

Thanks.......Dave

To my knowledge, they are the same thing, except for when use use one of the commands that creates points along horizontal alignments. In that case, "Automatic - Object" will put the Alignment name and station in the description.

You can't have alphanumeric point numbers in Civil 3D. You can specify Point Names, but every point must also have a Point Number, so it can be something of a pain trying to use Point Names instead of Point Numbers. However, the Point Names might work for you, depending on your exact needs.

(Edit - Oops, just re-read your post and saw that you're trying to autogenerate Point Names... Not sure about that, since we don't use them.)

Hi Sinc,

Thanks for your reply.

Years ago, when I was an instument operator, I was directed to take 4 GPS shots of each monument, thusly--1A,1B,1C, and 1D. The office surveyor would take an average of the shots and that average would be point #1. I don't remember which version of autocad he used. Probably LDD 2004. All the modern data collectors allow you to use alpha-numeric points.

Remembering that, I tried to make alpha/numeric point names. No go. All it did was assign the next point number, which left me completely baffled. Thanks for clarifying. I'll try to make a few alpha names now and see what happens.

I'll also play with the Automatic-Object setting to get a firmer grip on it. Thanks for your explanation.

Hi Sinc,

OK, I used Create Points > Alignment: At Geometry Points to create geometry points on a horizontal alignment. First I set Prompt For Descriptions to Automatic, and I got no raw or full descriptions. Then I set it to Automatic-Object and got a long-winded description in both raw and full descriptions, thusly:

Alignment - For Alignment Commands - 0+00.00 - BOA

It would be nice to have just BOA in the raw description. Which command controls the "Reader's Digest Version" for the raw description?
