Corridor surface datum not showing up for earthwork materials

I'm kind of stuck and hoping someone can see what I did wrong.  I created an existing surface.  Created a new alignment with a design profile.  I created a corridor and sample lines.  The cross sections show my assembly in it.  I click on my corridor and corridor surface and it shows a datum for the corridor.  But when I go to compute materials, my alignment and sample lines show up. I hit ok and when I choose my surface and datum, the only choice is the existing surface and my datum surface doesn't show up.

I'm hoping someone can help me out.  Thank you for your time.

@Rubixcube10 ,

You have created a corridor surface.. but you did not add any Data to it yet, so it's empty (image below).

...Go to your Corridor Properties >> Surfaces tab, then Add data to your surface. I had to  (1) UNCHECK your corridor surface, then (2) Add Data, then (3) Re-Check your surface... Then (4) hit OK and it will build your corridor surface with your new data. (image below)

@Rubixcube10 ,

UPDATE:

I don't work with materials much. I thought you were trying to understand why your corridor surface was not appearing. I probably misinterpreted your question.

Can you please show us, with some images, of where your problem lies?

If I had to GUESS, I see that your Subassembly does not list any Materials. Perhaps that is part of the issue.

Best,

 This is what started my question.  When I went to compute materials under earthwork, the "ground topo" shows up for existing ground and when I click on the datum, only ground topo shows up and not my corridor surface.

I can see them show up in the cross section.  I don't know much about subassembly but you're guess seems to be correct.  Do you have any suggestions just to get the basic cut or fill of material?  Thanks for your help.

Hi @Rubixcube10, it seems your surface is not showing up there because you have not sampled it with your sample line group. Select a sample line, go to the ribbon and select "sample more sources." When the window prompts, select your surface on the left side, click "add" and then go to your compute materials window again and you'll see the surface on the drop-down list.

I hope this helps. Best regards!

Thank you for your help.  With the steps you gave me, I can now choose the corridor for the datum.  Unfortunately, when I try to do a volume report or table, everything comes out at zero's.

Hi again @Rubixcube10. I hope you are doing well. Firstly, if as you sign in your post, you are using Civil 3D 2012, I advise you to update if possible. There are many updates, enhancements and bug fixes that have been made to this software in more than 10 years.

I computed the cut/fill materials with the file you posted and I did not get zeros on the report. Take a look:

You might be forgetting the very good advice @CodeDing gave you in his first post, which is that you need to correct your Datum surface. Remember this surface had no definition, no data. You must add the Datum code so the program knows how to create this geometry. Look at the following image.

Once you correct that, you should not be getting zeros in your report anymore.

I attached a copy of your file with this adjustments so you can take a look. Please let me know if you can open the file, I use Civil 3D 2025.

Best regards!

Thank you for your help.  I am currently using the 2023 version.  I'm just getting back to this project and I will definitely try again with your advice.

So I have mine and yours opened.  I followed Codeding advice and made sure to add datum instead of top.  The surface properties matches yours in the picture.

I click on compute materials.  I get the select a sample line group.  Same as your dwg.  But then the next screen is totally different from yours.  I have attached screen shots.  The first is the screen shot is similar to codeding and exactly like your picture.  The next picture is the computer materials screen shot mine versus yours.

I'm guessing I am still missing a step.  I appreciate your help, thank you.  Have a great day.

EDIT:  I have figured out my last step.  I just needed to be on the "cut and fill" quantity takeoff criteria, insert the EG and Corridor surface datum and click ok and when I clicked on compute materials I get the same screen as yours.  Thank you for your help to you both.

Also, I have one more question, I can create a total volume table in the drawing but when I click on volume report and hit ok.  It doesn't do anything.  Is this a bug for the 2023 version?

Hi @Rubixcube10, I'm sorry for the delayed response. The differences you mentioned are related to two different windows. I infer "mine.pdf" is shown after following this: Go to Analyze tab, Go to Volumes and materials panel, and select "Compute materials" is this right?

ecfernandez_0-1736519184524.png

The "yours.pdf" shows up after the following: On the Toolspace, Go to the alignment collection and expand it, then to the sample line groups, right click, properties, and then selecting the material list tab

ecfernandez_1-1736519364222.png

ecfernandez_2-1736519407487.png

You can compute materials by following either of both, but you are right. They look different.

I hope this clarifies the issue. Have a great day, too.

Best regards!
