Convert Curves within an Alignment

Hi all,

 

I have been having some trouble with my alignments lately when creating them from objects. I had a pline that consisted of a combination of arcs and lines between each vertex. I created an alignment from object with default radius of 200'. The alingment overall looks fine, there are a few portions that I wish to modify, but when I go into my geometry editor and click delete PI or add free curve fillet between entities, there is no vertices to choose! So I opened up the alginment grid view and when I look at the type it shows curve instead of line. I just want to delete the curve (or convert) and replace it with a straight line. When I delete the sub entity then my offset alignments that are dynamically linked automatically stop at where I deleted the entity even if I try to connect them again. Some snips attached for clarification... red line is my alignment, and yellow is the line I want it to follow. Any ideas on how to convert curves to lines or replace the circles with PI that I can actually work with.

 

Will to talk it through if someone has an idea of what the problem is.

While removing PI stations make sure that you turned off OSNAP settings sometime it snaps to different stations. also i recommend to zoom particularity which you want to remove or delete the PI station.

What i can suggest you is, First Add or insert the new PI station at both ends of Yellow line (where your Tangent starts and end) once you have that PI stations then remove these PI station on your curve and automatically it will follow your yellow line (Tangent of your alignment) then you can decide you want to keep the PI stations at start and end point of your yellow line.

Hi Neil -

 

A PI cannot be inserted along a curve, only along line segments. These entities are marked curve, regardless of snap settings I  cannot insert a PI along a curve.

could you please share the file so that i can try and resend it to you.

If its breach the company policy just export the Issues alignment to Landxml file and also share the yellow line (desired alignment) so that can check and fix the issue.

i am not able to see the reference line (Yellow Line) where your alignment get modified could you please recheck and send the same.

Here is the problem with using polylines for alignments.  Unless something has changed in the last few versions of Civil 3D, polylines work great if you use them before placing your curves.  Just use them as P.I.s because when they are converted to alignments and curves added, they do not remain tangent.  Using alignments made with polylines and curves do no remain tangent when moving the P.I.s

Hi Bill - I agree with what you are saying, however that defeats the purpose of the command. It is significantly easier to draft a spline or pline and then flatten the object and convert it into an alignment. If you build the alignment from scratch or keep arcs/curves out of the pline before it is converted then it takes significantly longer because each PI and curve radius needs to be adjusted by hand for a line of best fit... that may not even turn out as well fit as the pline you wanted it to follow.  I think if I can find a way to convert the curve section of my alignment (or delete and connect with a line) then I would be OK moving forwarding using this method.

Well, I guess we can agree to disagree.  Using the alignment table to change radii and other points is as easy as it gets.

 

BTW, I don't think that Civil 3D ever liked a spline.

Here is the solutions,

Method-1

Simply explode everything and rejoin the arcs, line and then create an alignment. Very easy and shortcuts.

Method-2

Explode the polyinine (whee you want to edit alignment) and use option convert autocad line and arc. once you click this and choose the line automatically it will convert to alignment and easily you can delete the unwanted entity.

But in your case if you do this you were unable to see the stations after some particular length.

How to fix this? 
Drawn line direction should match the alignment direct before you convert it or change the alignment direction first and then convert the line it will work automatically once you cleaned the alignment again you reset the alignment direction like before.

In this attachment i used the Method-2 because i cant explode and create from the alignment from scratch because i have see the design speed on the alignment design criteria tab.

 

What Was the actual issue:

Some of the lines or arcs draw direction was not matching to actual alignment and also very small entities found between segments.
