Contours disappear when zooming out

Whenever I zoom out in a drawing in Civil 3D with surface contours, some of the contours disappear.  Can anyone tell me how to remedy this? I imagine this is a result from a system variable setting but could not find it.

The command "LevelOfDetailOff" will disable this feature. "LevelOfDetail" will turn it back on. This feature was added to speed up the display of surfaces and reduce the memory required to display them. As you zoom in and out, contours will display / hide automatically. The same happens with surface triangles. This is a display only feature, the surface is not modified.
