Change <default> Point and Label Styles

Hi, all.

Was wondering: is it possible to either edit the "<default>" point and label styles or change the point and label styles that cogo points with unknown description code are assigned by default?

I don't mean "how to change the default point and label styles" - that's easy. I'm talking about the "<default>" point and label styles, a style actually named <default> that is innate to Civil 3D that is assigned to points that have a code that it doesn't recognize (not in the description key sets).

Here's the situation:

  • If a cogo point is created with a code that is recognized by the Description Key Sets (DKS), it will use whatever point and label styles we assign there - this works;
  • If a cogo point is create without a code (empty code), it will use whatever point and label styles we assign to the "empty" code in the DKS, like the images below - this works:

  • Here is the problem: if a cogo point is created with a code, but one that the DKS does not recognize, it will not use the styles assigned in the "empty" key (see image above), but it will use the style for point and labels called <default>. See image below:

I’ve looked everywhere but could not find where that style is stored. Nor could I find how to set the style for unknown codes – The obvious place to change/find that would be:

  • Toolspace > Point > Point Styles – not there
  • Toolspace > Point > Label Styles – not there
  • Toolspace > Point > Description Key Sets – not there
  • Toolspace > Point > Commands > Create Points > Default Styles – not there

One of the reasons I’d like to change it is because, occasionally, our field survey crew will use a code that does not exist (happens for whatever reason), and when those observations comes into drawing all they get is that <default> style, which only places a tiny “x” on it…

At this point, is it even possible to change that?

Thanks in advance for any help

Is it stored under the command settings for creating points?

Toolspace->Settings Tab->Current drawing->Point->Commands->Create Points:

or

Toolspace->Settings tab -> current drawing->Point Right click Edit Feature Settings

Thanks, Chris, but I've been there and checked that - not there...

Do you have the same issue? I mean, if you have a couple of minutes, can you create a cogo point and give it a description (code) that doesn't exist - what style does it inherit?

Edgar, when the point style and/or label style read <default> then the style(s) assigned to the controlling PointGroup for the point are used to display the point. So, in your case, I would venture a guess that your "_All Points" group has the Basic (or Standard) Point Style and <none> Label Style set.

Dear Friend,

I found an old thread which has same kind of issue. Please refer the link below.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-civil-3d-forum/all-points-default-point-label-style/td-p/3945...

It is the same that @Jeff_M has pointed out

Thanks

If description keys are being used, then you can't use a default style. If a point doesn't match the description keys in the sets, then no styles are assigned to the point.

To get around this, create a new description key set (call it something like "Catch All") and create a single key in it with the code "?*" (no quotes). This will match all points. Set the styles you want to be the default to this key and it will act as a default. Just make sure in your Description Key Sets Properties that this "Catch All" description key set is at the bottom of the list.

Hi, @Jeff_M.

Your comment seemed to be spot on! Editing the "_All Point" group in the template easily did the trick. Thanks!

@BrianHailey, your answer was also a good one and did work. I just didn't choose that for our template because the rest of the CAD team here wouldn't be too happy about having "an extra" descriptor key set. By the way, the video you did rocked!

Thanks everyone, you were all very helpful! Smiley Happy

Tanks Jeff_M.  I've run into this issue several times.  The setting location for this is certianly not intuitive (at least for me).  Rather than changing this setting from the "Settings" tap of Toolspace, I had to go to Prospector > (insert dwg title) > Point Groups > *right click* & select properties.  Thanks all!

I found if you use the _Autodesk Civil 3D (Metric) NCS.dwt template and manually create a COGO point, the point style and label style are both set to a non-existent <default> style. Even though the point creation command settings and _All Points point group both use Basic as the default style.

Even if you create a <default> point style (shown at top of pic), Civil 3D will assign a non-existent style of the same name as shown at the bottom of this pic. So if you actually want to use <default> you have to re-pick it from the list. Tested with Civil 3D 2019.

I know this is an old thread but after changing the default settings of the _all points group as Jeff_M recommended, I was still getting the rogue <default> style. I finally found a setting under Settings-Points-Commands-create Points, expand Points Creation and set Disable Description Keys to TRUE. Hopefully this will help anyone else who is not using Description Keys and having this issue with point styles.
