C3D shuts down when editing elevations

I have a fairly straightforward surface that's suddenly gone off the rails.  If i try to edit an elevation point on a feature line C3D crashes.  I've gotten the same results with the quick elevation edit and elevation editor.  I've repeated the same scenario on different features lines with the same crash.  I have started a new, unrelated file and everything worked as it should.  I've run audit, recover and purge with no success.  Any thoughts on how to fix it within the file is appreciated. I've never taken a surface and put (copy/paste?0) it into a new file but i'm starting to suspect that's where this is headed.  Thanks for any thoughts -

If the audit didn't do the trick your probably at a point where you need to copy/paste to another file. Especially considering you don't have the issue in a new drawing.

Yeah, something's wrong somewhere, even exporting as an xml file didn't work right.  thankfully it's small so i can redo it.  thanks for the input.
