C3D Grading Tutorial/Grading From a Complex Building Footprint\Ex. 2 Grading from a Building Footprint to a Surface

When I run the tutorial I get the error message: "The target surface has not data"

I get that message because the link is to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Autocad 2022\C3D\Help\Civil Tutorials\Parcel Boundary and EG surfaces.xml

The problem is that I'm working in Autocad 2023.   The Parcel Boundary and EG surfaces.xml exists but it's under Autocad 2023.

How do I redirect/fix?

Thanks

Hi @JimJonesPELS!

It seems the Grading-6.dwg file is with the wrong surface. Try to open the Grading-7.dwg file and delete the feature lines, gradings.. and then PASTEORIGIN the elements from Grading-6.dwg file.

The surface for this tutorial I believe is this one: ....\C3D\Help\Civil Tutorials\EG_Surface_Grading.xml. But... it is easier to do as I mentioned above.

Best regards,

@JimJonesPELS

Honestly, I've never done the tutorials, not saying that a bad thing, I just dove in.

While they are helpful, I believe that AD is pushing more to learning, by just hitting the learn pull down on this page. I even do this as a refresher as I'm not doing design per say but handing data to those that do. This site works has little videos and datasets. It's worth checking out. From days past the tutorials where just data.. This is much more

Thanks for the response.  I opened Grading 7, erased the feature line and copied the feature line from Grading 6 but had the same result.  I'm not clear on what you meant by "elements" to copy from Grading 6.

What am I missing?

Also, I don't see any .xml files under Civil Tutorials.  I'm looking on the "C" drive Program Files.  Where am I going wrong there?

Thanks again,

Jim

Thanks for the response.  I have used some of the tutorials in the past under Learn.  I'll try the grading set.  I've been soldiering through the tutorials with mixed success.

Really tough to learn all this without mentoring.  Lots of things seem to just fall through the cracks.

Thanks again,

Jim

Hi @JimJonesPELS.

I mean the feature line and the labels. In Grading-7 is there a surface for you? I opened here and the surface for this tutorial was there. I attached the XML file here with the surface, in case you can't find the folder with the XMLs, so you may import it into your file.

Grading-6 has an error with the surface importation, it seems. For me in the Grading-6 file, there are a feature line and the labels only. As I mentioned, it is easier to open the Grading-7 file, erase the edits and work from there.

About the xmls files: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2023\C3D\Help\Civil Tutorials.  If the folder is empty or without the XMLs, it may be an installation issue.

There is an "EG_Surface_Grading.xml" that I believe is the file for this tutorial (you can check in the surface where it came from, properties -> definition -> there is a file address with the imported XML).

I agree with Rick, the Learning Courses are great. And if you need any help, there are (a lot) of good people around the forums, so do not hesitate!!

Best regards,

Thanks for the additional information - much appreciated.

When I open Grading-7 I get an error message for the EG surface which pops up in the Event Viewer.  Apparently, the exercise is looking for the surface under the C:\Program tree but under Autocad 2022 not 2023 which I'm actually working in.  The EG_Surface_Grading.xml file is under Autocad 2023 but there is no Autocad 2022.  The situation is the same for both Grading_6 & _7 so it doesn't appear to help to try and delete and import between the tutorials.

I'm thinking what I need to do to fix is to create a new surface pointing at the 2023 root and rebuild based on that surface - does that sound about right?

Thanks again,

Jim

@JimJonesPELS, now I see! And yeah, that sounds right.

I opened here tutorials Grading-6 and 7 from Civil 3D 2022, Grading-6's surface is the wrong one (does not show). Grading-7 is with the correct surface.

Then, I opened tutorials Grading-6 and 7 from Civil 3D 2023 and they both are connected to the 2022 folder 🤔

As there are some modifications that you can see in Properties --> Definition, only the surface is not enough. The exercise changes the surface's coordinates and adds a boundary.

One way to import the right surface with the transformations ok (coordinates, boundary...) is importing the XML I sent above.

I fixed the problem by right-clicking on EG Surface in Grading 7 and opening up Surface Properties dialogue box.  Then click on Import XML file in the Operation Type window, file folder opens up in the correct (2023) folder, click open, rebuild the surface and problem is fixed.

A lot of work for a small reward but I suppose does have educational benefits which, is after all, the central point.

Thanks for your help.  This exchange has been useful.
