Breaklines not working from figure prefix database

Hi,

I'm new to Civil 3D, and am trying to set up a survey template. I have most of it working, but when it comes to veiwing the surface, something is wrong.

I have my figure prefix database set up and have the breaklines ticked for channels, kerbs etc -

I also have my surface set up so as all I have to do is update my surface points to create the surface -

But when I do this, it doesn't use the channels, kerbs etc as breaklines and the contours are a mess -

If I then go surfaces/definitions/breaklines/add breaklines and select them all, it works perfectly and looks tidy -

How do I make it see these as breaklines from the start to save me selecting every line each time?

Thank in advance for your help!

Your work flow is correct.  In your prefix database the checks are if the code can be considered for a breakline.  Then these will be the ones in the add breakline command.  When you add the breaklines that's where you can choose to not add them for any reason.

To get the breaklines available for use in a surface without selecting them each time, you can set up a Survey Figure Query that will capture all breakline figures. This file can be saved and made available for other survey databases as well. Once the figure query is created then you can add the query to your surface definition, so that it automates the selection as the query gets your data from the database. This can also be done with points if you only want specific descriptions like Ground points or Manholes or Drainage sturctures.

I would make a recommendation that your remove the asterisk from the figure code and only use at minimum 2-code figure prefixes this will make coding and symbology (description keys) work smoother as conflicts between the two can be a nightmare, with linkework going all over the place, especially when use automated linework processing.

Aren't survey queries limited to 25?  That's why I never used them.  It was just easier to add a point group and breaklines and done.

Not that I've seen, and I've got hundreds of figures in my SDB for a 1 mile section of city street/highway. I also query the database so that I only import my description key data or data that does not have a figure. When you have 3-6k points in a database, pushing that useless information to a drawing that already has the information stored in the figure just bloats the drawing file. By doing this I keep my drawing to around 2mb, I'm also using data shortcuts, so I have a separate surface file as well.

Hi LucasHicks,

Thanks for the reply, I didn't know the checks were so they could be considered, now I understand the process it makes more sense. I was selecting each line individually, but now I know that, I can just select the whole survey and its done in a couple of seconds, which solves my issue. Thanks again

Hi rl_jackson,

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to sound a bit stupid here, but I don't know how to set up Survey Figure Query?

I get your point on the asterisk, but I am moving over to C3D from MX roads, the code prefixes are what we have used for years as part of the MX Styleset, so to minimise changes to how the surveys are completed in the field, I have set it up the best way I could to allow the surveyors to continue using the same codes.

It is working pretty well at the moment so unless I have issues with it, I'll leave it be, I appreciate the help though, thank you.
