Background Plot Request Could Not Be Completed

A co-worker got this error when trying to plot in background "Your request could not be completed due to an unexpected problem. Turn off Background plotting and try to plot again". We have tried re-booting CAD, un-checking the boxes in "Options/ Plot and Publish" and the box under the individual sheet print screen. Nothing seems to work. Turning off background publishing allows the sheets to publish, but why can't we do publish in background?

The question I would have is why would you want to do background publishing? It takes much longer to do and has always had odd problems like this. I've never seen any reason to ever enable this.

Just start your publish job and let it run as normal. If you want to work on other files, open a second session of Civil 3D.

Someone here likes it and requested that I look into it?

I have found it to be a memory issue: Large surfaces and LIDAR are the usual culprits for me.
