autosave always?

Currently, your autosaves clear out if you exit autocad/civil 3d.

Is there anyway to have autosaves remain (to be cleared out manually by the user).

Sometimes I exit the program without thinking and lose work.

Autosave only keeps a copy in the event of fatal error. Save early and often

I understand that. I was asking what others do to get around this. (besides saving often)

There's always instances where i don't want to save often because of the instability of civil 3d. For example, using grading features. Usually I'll browse around the drawing before saving to ensure things are still intact.

I used to have a program that copied .sv$ files as they were created to a data drive but it wasn't fool proof either.

like you say; that will need a routine.

I like to copy backups on open so I at least have that if the ____ hit the fan.

You can make a button or a key stroke macro that copies the *.sv$ as they are created to a separate folder. still user dependant but you would have it.

I like using a corridor since feature line baseline have been added to corridors I dont even bother with feature lines/ grading surface creation.  I highly recommend exploring corridors with feature line baselines. You can use a null assembly for linear breaks that dont have a specific shape

Forgive me for asking, but how many more times do you think you will keep doing that before you learn to stop and plan ahead? I'm curious if there are just as many times you open then do NOT wish to save, or you are just able to change your workflows/actions.

And how do you close your files normally too?

Stop accidentally closing? How do I plan for that?

I'm not sure what you mean by how do I close my files normally? Is there a method of closing files that is not recommended?

You never explained the problem enough:

1) are you not getting a prompt to save when you exit or close a file?
OR
2) are you just ignoring it and clicking on the wrong button or prompt then regretting it later?

hello,

just my two cents -

those of us that have used autocad since computers came in a "cow box"

or before the word "pentium" was in common use -

we worked with a DOS operating system and maybe a total of 40 meg hard drive space.

SAVE was not just a command - it was how we got our work done.

do not save when you go to lunch or at the end of the day.

you should save every several commands or key strokes.

when your phone rings, someone wants to talk or you leave your computer for any reason.

Saving takes seconds and saves HOURS or labor.

cheap insurance,

change your work habits and Autosave is something for computer crashes.

good luck,

nonbeard13

(and yes, i am old and have been using Autocad for 20+ years)

Lots of free synch utilities out there. Just setup a mirror to another folder (copy new/updated, do not delete removed files).
