AutoCAD Civil 2020 Extreme stuttering when panning model space on remote (Microsoft Remote Desktop)

Experiencing extreme stuttering when panning in remote desktop. No issues with regular AutoCAD or Revit (or any other program).  The issue is confined exclusively to Civil 3D 2020.

The following settings are disabled:

• Hardware acceleration is off
• Dynmode: 0
• Cursortype: 0
• Dynamic UCS: 0
• Rollovertips: 0

Hello!

It's hard to say just by description. Remote desktop can be laggy, but civil3d specifically can stutter for a number of reasons - complexity being the first idea. Complex drawing stutter on local computers, if your remote has lesser specs you're done for.

Thanks @igi_pop . The machine running it has 32gb RAM and a Quadro K620. The file is very simple (in fact, the issue persists on brand new empty files as well).

I had that card, not much in it. But whatever it is, hardware acceleration won't work on remote desktop.

Another thing, wireframe (opposed to 2d wireframe) seems to lag more for me. But if it's a blank drawing..i'm drawing a blank 😄

Hope someone pitches in.

I noticed that with Intersection and/or Apparent Intersection set to on when using running osnaps C3D is a dog - it's always looking for an intersection. If you have these and object snaps on try turning them off.

Would it be possible for you to make a Screencast or other video showing the stuttering. It might give us a clue.

Happens to me as well when i work from home.  Both office and home CPUs are top notch with top notch connections.  The only real fix i found was to NOT pan.  Just zoom in and out with the mouse wheel.  It took a bit of getting used to and was far better than the pan stuttering.

You could also us Zoom/Dynamic. I have a multi-button trackball and have 2 buttons programed for zoom-in and zoom-out.

@AllenJessupI appreciate the suggestion, but i'd rather not deal with zooming in/out if possible. It is extremely difficult to work with this. Again, this issue is localized exclusively to CIVIL 3d. No other program has this issue.

I've never seen anything like that. I can only offer the standard suggestion to update or roll back your graphics driver. One strange suggestion is to try a different mouse.  You could also try resetting the the profile in OPTIONS or http://cadpanacea.com/wp/?p=2826

As I said. These are only generic suggestions. I don't know a specific fix for you problem.

@AllenJessupit's not the mouse ( I don't think ). I neglected to mention one important thing: this stuttering only happens in model space. When I go to sheet layout - no stuttering.

As I said. I'm pretty much at a loss. The only reason I mentioned the mouse was that I was helping a friend with a problem with a file management program. After uninstalling/reinstalling and other attempts. I found the problem was that the scroll wheel was stuck.

@AllenJessupThanks. I've heard the mouse proposition before. However, if I type "PAN" and do the action with the click instead of the scroll wheel it produces the same result. I will try a different mouse out of curiosity however. Also, AutoCAD doesn't have this issue.

Good thing acad usually has 3 - 4 ways to do the same thing. I rarely pan -  never except in a PS viewport after the scale is set. My MBUTTONPAN is set to 0 so I can get the osnaps list up when I want it. I used to Zoom Dynamic all the time like @AllenJessup  but when they changed ZD to something that doesn't mean Zoom Dynamic I started using the scroll wheel to zoom in and out.

I think the key here is that it is specifically when using PAN that the stutters stutter. And if it's only in C3D it must have to do with the large amount of data being dragged around? What's your remote internet connection like? I'm usually on a cable ISP, but today using a DSL connection and I definitely notice the difference, not necessarily PANning, but in everything I do. Are you going in through a remote desktop client, a web browser, VPN or ? I've got a choice on which to use here, if you do you might try testing whether one works better than others. Time of day matters, too. I start very early and rarely notice stutters. At 10am when theoretically everybody in the city is logged on there's noticeable delays.

@sascari  Stranger and stranger. The fact that typing PAN has the same result pretty much proves it's a graphics issue.

Have you tried -PAN?

I would be tempted to guess that's it's being caused by a network lag. But why it would be limited to Model Space in Civil 3D I couldn't guess.

I think on a layout tab, if in paper space (as opposed to MS through the viewport), you're just dragging around a viewport. Does it stutter if you PAN while in MS through the viewport and you're (graphically) dragging AEC objects?

@Anonymousgood question. It doesn't stutter when through the viewport in sheet layout.  It's not the internet connection - I have fiber optic with 140 mbits  / s down on my last speed test run. It's not the file size: the same file when loaded on AutoCAD (regular, not civil) pans just fine. A brand new empty file in Civil 3d has the same stutter issue as I mentioned 4 posts earlier. 

To all those joining the thread: please take a moment to read the original post where I've confirmed the basic settings (hardware acceleration, selectioncycling, etc). I find I'm repeating myself a lot here. Thanks for your understanding 🙂
