Adding elevations to 3d polylines from points

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of creating a surface for a topo. I have a text file and dwg file for breaklines. The issue is that the break lines were generated in a older, different software. When I import the break lines they come in as 3Dpolylines but, all the vertices have 0 elevation. Is there a way to edit all the lines to adopt the elevations of the corresponding points? I know I can add them as proximity lines but, sometimes it behaves very oddly when I do that.

As, always you guys are a huge help.

Hi @nusouthsc

Try adding the 3D Polylines as a Non-Destructive breakline type instead of Proximity!

or, create a surface from the points only, then create Feature lines from Object/Select all the Polylines/assign elevations from surface.

hope this helps,

Josh,
"...import the break lines they come in as 3Dpolylines but, all the vertices have 0 elevation."
How are you importing them? Where do they come from? Without elevations, why do you even need them? There's tons of free elevation data out there: Contours, DEM's, LiDAR, etc...

Just recreate them using feature lines using your points.  Fastest way to get what you need.

Create feature line from object command, select your 3d poly, assign elevations to your surface (don't insert intermediate elevation points). That should do it. This feature line can then be added to your surface as a standard breakline.

Proximity breakline is a great idea too. Just in case proximity doesn't work though.

If you were to consider third party add-ons, DotSoft's C3DTools will allow you to select multiple 3dPolys (or FeatureLines) and if a CogoPoint exists at the figure vertices, it picks that elevation value up and assigns it.  Quick and easy, no wasted time jumping through hoops.

    Dave,

I am using the insert command to import them. The lines were generated by another field crew in Terramodel but I need them for our topo. I have used them as proximity lines with some success but, I have had some issues in the past with them behaving oddly. Not a deal breaker but, I wanted to know if there was a way to assign elevations from the points easily. I will try some of the suggestions listed below.

Thanks so much for the response.
