Accessing SQL Spatial Data from DBMS

Anonymous

Hi there,

What are the requirements for AutoCAD Civil 3D to access only specific tables in a spatial database on a MS SQL Server, permission-wise? We tried granting INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, DELETE to the specific tables, but the tables are not shown. db_datawriter probably grants access to all tables, but we would like to restrict the access to specific tables.

Background: We have a GIS department operating a large GIS-Database (ESRI) on MS SQL Server. We would like to read and write objects in some tables, but not all.

Thanks for any hint or advice

- Florian

I could be wrong here but in most cases C3D/Map must have read write access at all times. I don't believe you can be selective in this.

Thanks for your answer, @rl_jackson !

What do you mean by "at all times"? Do we need access for the complete database? Do you have any documentation for that?

Anyone else, that could verify, that access can't be restricted to some tables?

Maybe @lim.wendy could confirm this for you. I say this only because in most cases through all my years using AutoCad and its various incantations read/write access was required.

Hi @Anonymous , @rl_jackson ,

Thanks for reaching out. From my understanding, you need read/write access but I could be wrong. Let me check with the experts and get back to you ...

Hi @rl_jackson , @lim.wendy

Thanks for your replies. Please remember my initial question: Can read/write access be restricted to some tables in a database or do we need full read/write access to the complete database?

Very curious what the experts say. Thanks in advance for checking!

Hi @Anonymous,

Our experts have tested it, and have documented their findings in a knowledge article. We're making it live, which will take another day. I'll share the article link once it's available.

Appreciate your patience.

Hi @Anonymous ,

The article is live now:

Minimum permission necessary for AutoCAD Map 3D or Civil 3D to work with SQL Server.

It has the steps for Permission at the Server Level and Permission at the Database Level
