2019 zoom real time gets cancelled by Pan

In 2019, when I zoom real time, and then pan with the middle mouse button, the zoom function gets cancelled and converted to pan instead.

In 2013 (and any other version I've used since the middle mouse button) I can keep on using left-click to zoom, middle-button to pan, zoom, pan, zoom etc.

In 2019 as soon as I pan once with the middle button, the left-click doesn't zoom anymore, it converts to pan instead.

I first noticed this in plot-preview, but it is also true in the drawing in general.

Just to confirm, I'm seeing the same behavior in my Civil 3D 2019. I tried it in Civil 3D 2018 and AutoCAD 2019 with the same results. I tried it as far back as 2016 and I'm getting the same results. Looks like it was changed from the behavior you're used to quite a while ago.

Why would they do that? Why would anyone want that?

I don't think it was an intentional thing, I just don't think most people use the real time zoom. When you mentioned it, I had to figure out how to do it in the first place. Why not just use the scroll wheel?

Couple of reasons to use it:
1. In plot preview, you're automatically in the zoom realtime command as soon as the preview opens. So I use it often. (Of course the wheel works too, but realtime can be smoother and you're already in it!) I will miss it here most.

2. If I want to zoom to something specific. (Little bit of a rare case, but comes in handy when you need it.)
Let's say I pick a cogo point in prospector and choose "zoom to" but I still can't see the point because it's too small or it's right next to another point and I don't know which one is which. Zoom realtime is your friend because it will zoom precisely to the centre of the screen, where the point is. The scroll wheel zooms to wherever the mouse it, which will take you sideways from the location of the point you're looking for.
(In this case, the pan problem doesn't come up obviously.)

You mentioned many wouldn't use it or know how to. As you probably found out, it's easy when you know how. It's the default option in the ZOOM command. So I just type:
Z <enter> <enter>
