Is it a good idea to start learning how to code, let us say, in Python for creation of custom add-ins in Civil 3D. Does the future of Civil 3D hold much scope for Python to exploit its usage in automation/

If you going to dive into customizing for Civil 3D I would recommend  learning the .NET API.
