Profiles & Duplicate Surface References

I'm trying to solve a problem I've not seen before, rooted in a user's really poor practices, but it's my job to fix it and could use some help.
The issue:
There are multiple Surface DREFs with the same source (Surface1, Surface 1 (1), Surface1 (1) (1), etc), and the drawing has one Alignment with surface profile pointing to the original DREF and other Alignments that point to one of the other DREF.
The solution?
In VS Object Browser, it doesn't appear there is a way to set; Profile.DataSourceId or Profile.DataSourceName properties.
Aside from manually recreating everything, the only way I can see correcting this - and am just now starting to write code for to see if it even works - is to create a new Profile with correct DREF, match properties to the bad Profile, SwapIdWith(), then delete the bad Profile.
Is there an easier way to do this?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
