This isn't a new issue. Anyone should know that if they use a nostandard
font, they need to send the font file with the drawing to any outside
consultant.
Up until Acad began to support Windows fonts, everyone had to either a) use
a custom shx font, or b) settle for what came with Acad. Many, if not most,
architects went with a) because they cared about controlling the appearance
of their drawings. And they quickly figured out that they needed to ALWAYS
send all associated support files along with their drawings.
We don't use Windows fonts at all, because up until the current version they
caused God-awful performance problems, and I'm not 100% convinced this has
entirely gone away. After the debacle of Postscript fonts, I'm keeping to
the policy of letting a new feature ride for several releases, to see how it
pans out, before I build any office standards around it. I wasted time in
three consecutive versions because of jumping on the Postscript bandwagon
prematurely.
We continue using the same hand-lettering style custom SHX font that we have
used for years, because we do stock house plans, and it's important to us
that all of our plans are consistent in appearance. If we went with a
Windows font, we still wouldn't put a high priority (if any at all) on being
limited to the most commonly used fonts. We'd pick a font based on our
appearance preferences, with the understanding that it always needs to be
sent along with the drawing, just the same as things have always worked.
