What is an appropriate title?

I have finally got up the nerve to ask the boss for a title change. His
response was to mark up my business card and give it to him. So....

My current title is CAD Technician. I use the Title CAD Coordinator in
my email titles because it seams more appropriate when handling support
stuff, but this is not official. My current duties consist of :
installation of CAD software on computers, customization or AutoCAD,
support for CAD software, electronic signatures, monthly CAD
meetings/training, plotter support/supplies, software support for all
applications on computers, hardware support for all computers, provide
backup for IT when he is gone, etc. This is a short list of my job
duties. I would say they are the same as some of the list that have been
posted for duties of a CAD Manager.

Our CAD Manager who is also the IT guy still does some of this, most of
the duties have been shifted onto me or I do them the majority of the
time. Also as a CAD Technician I am given the big jobs to work on
because I am supposedly one of the only ones to be able to handle them.
Almost all engineers request me to be on there jobs. On these jobs I am
talking daily with people that are pretty high on the totem pole and aid
in making important decisions. I would be considered a Project Leader
type person that may or my not have someone under me to help on a
project.

My question is what are some titles others are using for people in
positions like this. I pretty much have my hands into everything, except
the engineering stuff. My thoughts are that I need 2 titles. One for
the technical side of things I do and one for the drafting and
management side of things. I was thinking CAD Coordinator and CAD
Technician Project Leader. Any Ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Jamie

Sounds very similar to my situation.
They came up with "Project CAD Manager."
Suits me fine.
'Course, they could call me butthead and I wouldn't mind.

Reminds me of the time I worked for an architect in Florida that gave me
business cards with my name on them with the title "Chief cook and bottle
washer" because I did everything there in the office.... from answering the
phone and welcome guests to design to final production drawings and field
inspections... that was before CAD tho.... all hand work.

My previous title was CAD Systems Manager. But I wasn't doing any drafting
or project work. It was all support, training, process development,
document management, etc... Before that job, I was "Senior Design
Associate". To be a "senior" you had your choice of three fabulous "special
duties". One was office manager - reporting vacation/sick day requests for
the team, managing office supplies, dealing with IS and purchasing, etc, one
was cad manager, and one was staffing (?) manager - dealing with new hires,
temps, outside contractors, etc. These three reporting directly to Chief of
Operations.

I don't really care about the name. I just want to get the respect that I
deserve from those I give my business cards to. When they say "CAD Technician"
some people automatically think that you are the lowest of low. When I deal
with support and technical stuff, some people don't respond in the same way
if they think I am just a "CAD Technician". The appropriate title somewhat
explains some of my abilities and decision making level.

Thank you all so far for your replies,
Jamie

I am "Director, Design Support Services"

Sounds big and fancy. It means Jack of all trades, master of none.

That is a good title. The word Director commutates some upper echelon
responsibilities. Design Support Services sounds like a good descriptive
title.

Not bad.

I like CADD Administrator.
It sounds more official than manager.
To me the "manager" is the person that people call when they are sick.
It also works for the IT part of what you do.
