Compressed diectories

has anyone experienced problems, or are there known issues with compressed
directories. The file server here has been set co compress a number of
directories - an IT decision that is out of my hands, but which makes some
sense given space constraints. I'm wondering if some of the crash frequency
is related to this.

We had a problem when our novell server was compressing old files. A
compressed file would open fine but then give read only errors when
closing. The solution was to set the server to completely decompress a
file as soon as it opened rather than wait until it gets saved.

We pretty much use compressed directories here on all our file servers for
dwg storage, (and all storage), and have experienced no problems that could
be attributed to this. We are using Win2K Advanced Servers, with Active
Directory. We have two offices connected via T1 WAN, and still no problems,
even for those accessing drawings over the WAN. (We try to avoid opening
drawings over the WAN, but sometimes it's unavoidable...)

As dick said...
We ourselves are using novell as our volume storage. Last year when
things were tight, we were loosing files to corruptness because of Dick's
exact reasons. Novell would uncompress the file, but did not have enough
room for the 300 or so users to do this consistantly through out the day.
We had approximately 1.5 gig free space, and most of that was being
reserved for Salvaging files. Novell however, does an excellent job of it's
compression ration (which is variable) when it is given enough room to
uncompress. (Backups were also a catalyst for disaster.)
We came to the conclusion that we either gave the money to IT or faced
closing down because deadlines were not being met.
Compression shouldn't be an issue, but lack of space would.

I'm seeing discussions here about DWG's and associated drawing files.

If this question has already been asked, please forgive me.

My questions is: Can I use Windows to compress the Autodesk subdirectories and have Autocad electrical run?

I have other software from a different vendor and that software will not run from a compressed directory.

Just like the discussions associated with servers and space I have a space problem on my computer HD.

Thanx in advance!

Nope.

Any reason a new HD is out of the question?

Hold on until next Xmas then, that's the true fix you seek: you need a bucket but only have a cup to work with.
