Working with active DWG files

I am new to the BIM 360 cloud working scenario. I have a rather large project consisting of REVIT files & DWG files that was originally on a server within the walls of the main office. We have moved all the folders/files onto BIM 360 Docs and are having success working with the REVIT files but are struggling with working with DWG files. What is the proper/suggested protocol for accessing and working with the DWG files?

You can't edit DWG file in the cloud like you can with Revit Cloud Worksharing.  One option is Autodesk Desktop Connector. The other option is Dropbox. The following is direct from Autodesk Support.

If the goal is to use Desktop Connector to enable collaboration in AutoCAD, the best workflow right now seems that it would be:

  1. Open BIM 360 Desktop Connector in File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the desired Account > Project > Folder > file.
  3. Right click on the file and select "Lock."
  4. Then open the file from Desktop Connector within AutoCAD.
  5. Make changes/edits and Save.
  6. Exit out of the file.
  7. Navigate back to the specific file in Desktop Connector from File Explorer and right click to "Unlock" making it available to others.
  • Note: If a file is locked via Desktop Connector/BIM 360, it will still open successfully in AutoCAD when opened via Desktop Connector and there does not appear to be any warning that the file is locked/read only. An error is only displayed if the user makes changes and tries to save them. In that case, a failed action will appear in the Pending Actions are of Desktop Connector:

Hello Barry,

There is an update to mpetrucci's information. You can edit in the cloud after you have established an Autodesk connector process. I work in both Revit and DWG in the cloud, I was able to bridge and connect with consultants outside my network. The key to achieving this is having permissions in projects within your network and outside your network.
