Upgrade model from revit 2018 to 2019 in Bim 360 Docs

Hi,

Trying to understand if there is an easy way to upgrade a model that was created in revit 2018 to 2019.

The model has been uploaded to Bim 360 Docs on 2018 version.

I guess I can download the model from docs (after publish) -> open with detach -> save as -> open with revit 2019 -> save as -> initate again in BIM 360 Docs.

hope you thinking about easy way.

Thank you ,

Amir

hi @amir.aroesti,

Typically we don't recommend upgrading your model during an active project.

If you do need to for one reason or another you are correct, this is the process you would follow.

Please see this article on upgrading Revit models in BIM 360 Docs.

1. Open the model in the current version of Revit.
2. File > Save As > save the file locally on your computer
3. Open the saved model in the newer version of Revit.
4. When the upgrade is completed, save the file again.
5. In Document management, Create a new cloud project for the new version.
6. In Revit, initiate collaboration for the upgraded model.

Thank you and have a great day!

It is not uncommon for projects to go on for  2-3+ years.  It is my understanding (from testing) that once you upload a Revit model to BIM 360 that you are "somewhat" committed to the verison of the uploaded Revit model, for the life of that project. The only solution to upgrading the project would be to download all the RVTs, create a new project and uploaded all the upgraded files (as you have also described).   This seems like a lot of work and if teams want to keep all project data together then you would have to download and reload ALL project files? As well a team would lose the versions generated to all documents to date?  What if a large project is still going and team is  now working with an unsupported release of  Revit.    Please let me know if this is going to be fixed at some point.  Otherwise,  I do not see any advantage for maintaining all project data/documents issued in BIM 360 if it will mean more work  and loss of versions with each upgrade.

I agree. There should be an easy button to upgrade all models to the latest version of Revit without losing all the project history. Maybe add it under the Manage cloud models?

Step 5 is insane, is BIM360 a building life cycle platform?
5. In Document management, Create a new cloud project for the new version

I can understand the need to download to upgrade (given current limitations) but why the need to create a new project?

Agreed,

I had to go through that whole process for a 2018.3 to 2019 upgrade. I am needing to upgrade another project now and am holding off with baited breath.

Last time I checked, life cycles run 360deg?

One click upgrade has been added under Project Admin module.

@jayson.sterba many of our projects can go as long as 8-12 years, depending on the project requirements. With Autodesk only maintaining 3 years of Revit at any given time, we have to upgrade almost annually to ensure smoother upgrades.

hi @Anonymous ,

Thanks for the added info!

As @Anonymous  mentioned above, we've added the 1-click upgrade feature for docs hosted projects.

Cheers

Agree, find the conflict between the 'project' mindset of BIM 360, and annual desktop upgrades, and the 'lifecycle' concept of BIM to be totally at odds with each other.

Both in the way Autodesk is building infrastructure in BIM 360 and the 'stay on a version for the length of the project' advice often given. For instance, BIM 360 insists a project be given a start and end date. All our 'projects' are operating facilities that only end with the end of a 30 year year lease or demo/rebuild of a facility.
