Difference between Markups and Issues

Anonymous

It's a bit unclear what the difference is between a Markup and an Issue. In a way, I feel like markups should just have the ability to be upgraded to an issue. Like a markup is an issue with no associated responsibility.

Then again, I think in this case Markups are a bit confusing and useless. Isn't a markup a badly managed issue? (missing due date and not assigned to anyone).

Please clarify the purpose of markups and issues, when we should use each one and what the long term vision is for both, if significantly different than the way it is used now.

Thanks!

At first glance, it seems that issues are woefully inadequate to document real issues. We need more than a point to identify an issue, we need the markup tools... (bubbles, etc).

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback!

Today, markups in BIM 360 Docs provide the ability to communicate via comments and annotations on drawings and models.  All users can create private markups, and users with higher-level permission can create "published" markups that are visible to all users. Markups automatically "slip sheet" (carry over) from one version to the next until you decide it is resolved and "archive" it.  Many customers use the markup tools for design reviews and/or for publishing and sharing the record set (using markups to indicate the location of RFI's, for example).

Issues in BIM 360 Docs are more formal, with assignment and due date.  While you cannot yet add a markup directly to an issue, this is on our product roadmap.  It sounds like this planned capability aligns with your request.  Please let us know if you have any other comments or suggestions.

To add to Joan's email. We have some help articles that go over these two features as well:

To Work with Issues

To Work with Issues (iOS Mobile)

To Work with Markups

To Work with Markups (iOS Mobile)

I hope this information also helps.

thank you,

Any chance you can update this thread with the post BIM 36Design transformation? The links that you have do not exist anymore.

Is this still on your planned roadmap 3 years later?

Hi All on this thread.

Can you please vote on this other thread that has the highest vote count on the BIM360 Ideas board.

It is the exact same request and combining your votes (if not done so already) will be a huge help.

I see this post from 2018 and now is still not possible to add mark ups on issues.
The idea behind BIM360 is very good, but in practice it seems quite difficult to work with. Not many possibilities while creating issues, poor navigation, ...

@joan_allen - you state above (2018), "Today, markups in BIM 360 Docs provide the ability to communicate via comments and annotations on drawings and models." In BIM 360 version, markups were available in 3D mode and my teams used this often and for the projects still in the BIM 360 version, we can still use the feature.

In the newer ACC version, this has been removed.  Software development is a huge undertaking - but removing working features is typically not a good thing.  And to be asked to add this to a wish list seems "extra" when you already have that piece of code sitting in your environment.

Please let us know when this can be turned back on?

You can add markup and issues to sheets and issues to 3d models.

@joan_allen You note in your post from 2018 that this feature is on the roadmap, however 6 years later it is still not incorporated into either BIM 360 or ACC?

We are finding it very challenging to be able to manage markups within ACC in particular, as the functionality that was in BIM 360 has actually been downgraded.

We're no longer able to archive markups, which means they sit on the sheet indefinitely and confuse our teams. The alternative is to unpublish or even delete them, but by doing so we lose the history of the markup. This is particularly important as part of the review process.

Another key issue is the way markups are added to a plan, in BIM 360 markups are grouped together which is very helpful to then be able to sort through, archive and publish one complete review set together. In ACC it is completely different, with each markup element being listed individually - this means we have hundreds of markups which need to be sorted through to manage. We're not able to archive them to retain the history, there's no status control to know when they're been closed out and are no longer relevant, there's no way of hiding individual markups and then exporting the sheet with only some showing, etc.

I wish we had set our company up on BIM 360 rather than ACC - the product simply is not good enough compared to where BIM 360 was for the basics such as markups - and the likes of these changes in approach to markups (along with not being able to markup 3D models) is severely hampering our design process.

Hi,

When could we expect markups in the issue option?

It would be a great addition to communicate issues with some solutions with markup.

Thanks

Have you guys used ACC markup tools in a major project drawing review? it is a disaster! after 6 years the markups still lack of basic capabilities like

- they are not groupable

- you can't connect them to an issue

- you cant create report

- They can't be assigned to a person or a group

Do you guys read and listen to your customers' requests? It is OK, but at least use it once and feel the pain.

It is disappointing.
