Current Workflow for BIM 360 Model Coordination - Clash Detection

Hi Everyone,

I have been getting crazy trying to figure out the best and most current workflow in getting clash detection within model co-ordination to work between model disciplines, e.g. Architectural, MEP, etc. (utilising revit files)

I have noticed in tutorial videos online people  are creating a blank revit model and then linking in each discipline model from the Shared folder in document management. You then create 3D Views of each discipline which makes each view essentially perform a clash against one another. I have tried this method, but where I fall short is when in Model Coordination, It detects clashes and produces a number of group clash for each view BUT when actually going into the clashes it displays each clash group as <NO OBJECT>.

What am I doing wrong? Is this even the best workflow? My ultimate aim is to get viewpoints of each building, for each discipline to carry out clash detection.

Guidance would very much be appreciated!

Attached is an image of what's happening in Model Coordination Clash Space.

Using Model Coordination is far from perfect, and you will have to try some options to find what works best for you.

Personally, I dislike the blank model approach, and prefer to use the Shared models directly.

One thing you didn't mention in your post, which you might like to explore if you haven't already, is the Model Browser tab. In the top section of this tab you can perform some fairly rudimentary property filtering (such as Categories) which can be saved with the View and will only clash with those filtered elements. But this has it's own issues as I've noted in this Idea, but it is a good step in the right direction.

Grouping by Object is fine if you want to review each element individually, but you might want to try some different grouping values which can speed up the process. Grouping values that I often use are those that are similar to Type, Name, and Size. Notice I said 'similar', because this list may differ between models, particularly if you are also using IFCs.

I hope this of some help. Good luck.

Hi Chad, Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas, sorry for the long response.

I'm keen on using the models directly from the Shared Folder, but how do I setup viewpoints for each building? I have a 3D View published and is visible in model coordination but This happens:

I use the 3D View of 'Building A' for example, but when importing the hydraulic model, it still shows the whole hydraulic model on the site?

What's the solution to this?

P.S. For others, the solution to the <No Object> issue when using a master revit file was to wait a few hours to let it process the whole model. It eventually loads.
