Shared Folder

If my firm is allowing all documents in the Project Files folder to be viewed by all, is there really any need or usefulness to go and update the 'Shared' folder? I assume that making the models visible by all also allows the users to control link/live link as necessary. So why do we need it if we can link our models directly in from that discipline's folder? The permissions at our office have been kind of a nightmare to adjust/prepare for...

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting to the BIM 360 Forum.

The intention of the Shared folder is to allow controlled sharing of Revit models in the project that have been shared out by a specific Team (I.e., the Structural team publishes and shares a version to the rest of the teams).

From your description, it sounds like you have setup permissions to allow Live Linking (I.e., all teams have at least View access to each other).  If this is the case, you don’t necessarily need to use/update the Shared folder.  That folder gets updated when a team “Shares” a package.

In your setup, disciplines are going to see the work in progress (WIP) models, as opposed to a published version that has been shared.
