CDE - Common Data Environment principles within BIM 360 Docs

Hello

As an owner/operator we are using BIM 360 as part of our Common Data Environment approach to managing our developing information from design to operational use for our facility managers.  One concept in BIM 360 that breaks all the CDE protocol's is the ability to copy files from one folder to another, I know that permissions and roles are designed to ensure the right people get the date they need but using folders and making copies is an outdated way of working that I am sure could be improved.

20 years ago at Heathrow we developed a CDE concept based on versioned Documents/models with different a status denoting the purpose of use (now ISO 19650). Workflows moved the document from one status to another, having versions that gave an audit history. From a user point, you only have one place to find the information you require with the permissions being controlled by a status. This concept has worked well for us where we manage multiple projects from Design to Construction and into Operational use.

It would be great if BIM 360 Docs could look at the concept of a single object in its database having the integrity and metadata to allow is status and purpose for use to change without having to copy into additional folders. Grateful for feedback.

I totally agree. I'm managing a Docs Project for a large construction project and I am continuously adding new folders to control visibility and permissions.

Now if the folders would be "virtual" in the sense that they are merely a visualisation based on Document (Custom) Attributes and search/filters, we would have a more flexible approach, which would make the platform easier to fit with the ISO 19650 CDE workflow.

100% agree here. We use other CDE's such as Viewpoint for projects (4p) and that's how it operates. Upload once into a folder, then links into virtual containers with an approval workflow to manage the data. So as @sboeykens suggests, virtual folders is the way to go here Autodesk. And yes, Autodesk really need to read up on ISO19650. If your serious about BIM this should be at the heart. Its only just hit the roadmap for some thought about changes in Revit to allow compliant revisioning.
