Recap cloudpoint file into Glue

I was wondering, can I upload a .rcp cloudpoint file into Glue? I mean, it seems to accept the file, but when I open it nothing shows up...

Hello,

Currently, Glue does not support direct .rcp uploads. Navisworks has ReCap integration, so I would recommend opening the .rcp in Navisworks, saving the files as a Navisworks file type, then take that new Navisworks file and upload to BIM 360 Glue. For a full list of file types supported by Glue, see the link below:

Autodesk BIM 360 Glue File Compatibility

Also, see our blog post regarding ReCap integration in Navisworks:

Autodesk 2017 Product Integration

If this helps, please mark as "accept as solution".

Regards,

This was I thought too, when you reply I was already doing that, so I considered the topic closed.. But then I completed the importation to Glue and this is the result

Capture d'écran 2017-01-19 15.06.16.png

Again, my workflow was: Recap file to Naviswork » Naviswork .nwd file to Glue

The preview in Glue showed the correct CloudPoint

But when you open the file, or you create a merge model, this is the result, just a bunch of cubes.. What am I doing wrong?

How did you bring it into Glue, was this through drag-and-drop in the Desktop, or did you Glue via Navisworks?

Also, did you check the options in Glue? I would check by selecting "options" then go to the "advanced" tab. Then check under "Visibility" the boxes for "text" and "lines". Then under "Graphics System" select "Autodesk", check "Hardware acceleration" and "Display Materials" and see if that helps.

Also, the scan may need to be converted in Navisworks as well - so that the point clouds are converted into objects that Glue can read:

You could private message me with a link to one of the ReCap files and I can try conversion in Navisworks and see if it comes through in Glue if you would like me to try that.

Ok, I run some more test, and now it's working.. My mistake was I was trying to open an .RCS model and not the .NWD model, which worked fine.. So the correct workflow should be

Cloudpoint to Revit » .RCP file to Naviswork » .NWD file to Glue » Glue upload the .NWD but also all the .RCS files associated with the .RCP file attached to the .NWD file » .RCS files in glue appears like a bucnch of nonsense cubes, but the .NWD file is read just fine by glue (I put all the .RCS files in a subfolder in order to avoid others mistakes).

Good to hear! Yes, you would want to glue the Navisworks file, not the rcp/rcs file. I'm glad to know it worked out for you.

Hi Scott, I sent you a private message, I linked the cloudpoint .nwd into BIM 360 Field, but nothing shows up in the model (in Field), not even little cubes.. Is BIM 360 Field supposed to be able to visualise the cloudpoint? Again, the same model works fine in Glue, but looks empty in Field...

@fpensa  Are you using the viewer in the BIM 360 Field mobile app on the iPad? The model isn't view-able from the web version. Could you check the iPad and take a screenshot of what you are seeing in the mobile app? So, if I understand you correctly, you shared the glued model in Glue with the Field project. Could you please send me a private message with a link to download the model? Your previous message contained no link other than a link back to this post.

Thank you,

-Scott

So, here how it appears in the BIM 360 Glue desktop appCapture d'écran 2017-01-24 09.34.26.png

Everything looks fine. Here how it appears in the BIM 360 Glue WEB application to the same modelCapture d'écran 2017-01-24 09.34.34.png

No Cloudpoints anymore, just cubes. Here when I try to share the model in FieldCapture d'écran 2017-01-24 09.38.10.png

The model is now in Field (first one on the right). The preview in the WEB application shows cubes, however the WEB application does not allow to open a model, you need to use the IOS application2017-01-24 09.44.01.png

The model is there (third to the left), the preview seems empty. Here what I see when I open it in the IOS application2017-01-24 09.44.38.png

I create a view which I'm sure it shows my model2017-01-24 09.44.13.png

Nothing's there ether...

Sorry, I didn't find the link to share the model with you, should I invite you into the Glue project?

Hi @scott.a.green , still no solution for this? Can we change the status of the topic since it's not solved still?

I've escalated this to a support case for you and removed the accepted solution. I haven't received any files, perhaps you can share those with me via the new support ticket.

I'm finding even if the Recap file/s are uploaded, they have to be sitting locally for the view to 'work', eg, see the points.

I just did a test.

New Navisworks File

Merge Pointcloud RCP

Saved as NWD

Copied NWD to Glue

Works fine

Delete local RCP and supporting folders

Open the Glue model

Points are gone, boxes in place.

I've done this heaps with clients, its like Glue needs to have a local cache of the points. So that means, locally it'll work, but when someone on the other side of the world opens it, they'll see the boxes as the points aren't local to their machine.

This thread also confirms it - https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/bim-360-glue-forum/problems-uploading-nwd-file-to-bim-360-glue/td-p/6...

Yes, I already mentioned that it wasn't supported. We did find a work-around for Glue - to load the rcs into Navisworks then save out as a Navisworks model, then upload the model to Glue - that works. However, if the model is shared with BIM 360 Field, in the ipad via the model viewer in Field, the model doesn't show up. So I think that the viewer in Field can't handle this type of model at all - even with the work-around in Navisworks. With Glue you do get a local cache, but I don't think that cache carries over the same way in the mobile app for Field on the ipad for these shared Glue models.

Ok, so I guess the final solution is to convert the cloudpoint in mesh from Recap360, handle the mesh in Remake and share it to Field through Glue.. that way it works...

I am thinking similarly. If the object is converted to mesh and shared with Glue it should show in Field - Glue does support .stl 3D mesh files so I would be surprised if the model viewer in Field that runs off of Glue can't show a model that was originally an .stl file.

Did you have a chance yet to try converting the point cloud to a 3D mesh format (.stl for example) and upload it to Glue - does the shared model's objects in the BIM 360 Field iPad app's Glue model viewer come through?

HI @scott.a.green,

So, I convert the cloudpoint in Recap360 to a mesh (files AutodeskRemakeModel and .obj), but neither of these two mesh files are managed by BIM 360 Glue, nor Naviswork. So, using Autodesk Remake, I exported the mesh into a .fbx file, which cannot be managed in BIM 360 Field but can be imported in Naviswork. Then I saved the Naviswork mesh into a .nwd file, and finally there it is, my mesh visible in Glue (plugin, web and Ipad app).

2017-04-18_1203.png

However, in the end, I linked the .nwd model into Field, and it didn't work. It seems to properly shows up in the project admin view

2017-04-18_1159.png

But, when the iPad is synchronized, the model doesn't work

2017-04-18 11.55.47.png2017-04-18 11.55.50.png

So, let's resume: in order to use a Cloudpoint in Glue, we need to

1- Create a mesh from Recap360

2- Convert the mesh into a .fbx file through Autodesk Remake

3- Import the .fbx file into a Naviswork file and save it as .nwd

4- Import the .nwd into Glue

Otherwise, it is possible to import directly à cloudpoint (.rcp) into Naviswork and import the .nwd into Glue, but it will only be available in the local BIM 360 Glue plugin. However, to this day, a proper workaround has yet to be found in order to link the cloudpoint/mesh to BIM 360 Field

So, regarding the cloudpoint in Glue, any chance Autodesk will provide a better integration of the .rcp files into Glue, or at least simplify this workflow? For example, being able to export meshes from Recap360 into a .fbx, or being able to read .obj files in Naviswork, cutting out at least Remake from this complicated workflow.... The best would be BIM 360 Glue being able to work directly with meshes coming out from Recap360, so the workflow could be more like

1- Create a mesh from a cloudpoint in Recap360 (.obj or enhance .fbx export ability)

2- import the mesh file into BIM 360 Glue

Regarding the cloudpoint in Field, any chance Autodesk will provide the ability to shows a .fbx, .obj or whatever other mesh file coming out from Recap360/ Remake, through Naviswork or not?

Regards,

Exactly. It only works for local. But, Glue is not meant to use local. I hope they would make some changes in Glue so that I can support point cloud.
