While viewing the aggregated project model, Design Collaboration allows to filter and navigate by building levels, phases or collaborating teams. Just in the way people think about project data.
We decided to move the access points, or buttons, for these panels from the viewer toolbar to a new vertical toolbar on the left-hand side of the model viewer. OK, I need to admit that the toolbar might not seem so brand new to most of you, as it is the same you know well from viewing models or sheets in Document Management.

So, consistency and familiarity for users have been drivers behind this decision.
Another advantage is, that the panels won’t be free floating anymore, they will be docked to the toolbar, and thus will have the same fixed position all the time. We know, this behavior is a bit double edged, as only one panel can be open at a time. Using for example both a level and a phase filter at the same time is still possible of course, you just can’t have both panels on screen at the same time. On the other hand, it cleans up the user interface a lot, and helps users to keep a clear focus on the data itself. Filter panels and other dialogs will no more be hiding the project model too much.
See the brief video attached please for first insights.
This leads to another aspect of the rationale behind introducing the vertical toolbar and its docked panel: it will allow us to add more tools to it without cluttering the user interface.
The Set Browser to navigate through a set’s content got moved already, the result list for Change Visualization will be next.
Additionally, in a separate effort we are working on making Issues functionality available for review workflows in Design Collaboration. Creating and reviewing issues will be accessible from the vertical toolbar then as well.
We hope you like this approach, as always, let us know your thoughts, ideas and feedback.
Thanks and best regards,
Markus
