Maya Crashes when rendering Bifrost Aero with Redshift

Hello there, Maya/Redshift constantly crashes if i use batch rendering volumetric objects (Bifrost Aero) i assume it related to channels bifrost writes in .vdb file. Tried on Redshift Redshift v3.0.35 / Redshift v3.0.36 using Maya 2018.6 / Maya 2020.4 . In every situations it crashes.
If i left only one density channel i guess it works normally (didn’t notice crashes yet) but some of the channels have problems with redshift as it crashes with no logs after, just killing maya process. Seems like denisty channel have smaller grid to be parsed by Redshift, others is extremely huge, like 8kx8kx8k it’s impossible to parse the grid and RS crashes. Bifrost 2.2.0.1.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue. We're aware of it and working on a proper fix. In the meantime, you can apply the

two compounds set_coarser_level_temperature_values_to_default (where you make sure to plug the ambient temperature into the default value port) and set_coarser_level_velocity_values_to_default at the end of your graph to fix the issue.
In Bifrost the simulation is inherently spatially adaptive which means we can have valid values far away from the main simulation (but at very coarse resolution), but these non-default values are saved into the vdb and other packages might try to create a large non-adaptive grid around these values hence causing the 8k cubed grid. The compounds attached set these coarser far-away values to their default so they should no longer be saved out to the vdb.

The one caveat with these compounds is that if you're using the aero_adaptivity_settings it will not work as intended, but we will work on a proper fix that will work in all cases.

Cheers,

Michael
