Am I losing my mind? Set Color not working?

I'm probably doing something remarkably stupid here, but for the life of me I can't work out what?

What I started out trying to do was to retrieve the CPV information, do stuff with it, re output on colour channel ... seems no matter what i do I am doing it in beige.  The data is there (see 2nd screenshot) but can I get it out to colour values?  No, is beige for me apparently.  I would love it if this was a super dumb mistake - so far i have done all kinds of things up to and including installing 2.1

Any ideas?

I am not losing my mind.  But I did make a n00b mistake around vector3 and vector4.
I apologise to anyone who read this for wasting their time.
