starting AutoSketch by clicking file name?

My new AutoSketch 9 (build 88, 7/8/2004) works fine, if opening the .SKF
file from the AutoSketch File - Open menu, or from Recent Files too.

It does not work if I just double click the file name in Windows XP
Explorer. I only get a very brief hourglass, and then nothing, as if it is
ignored. It is not ignored, it just cannot run.

It is not a Windows file associations problem.
1. After clicking, in Task Manager, I see Sketch.exe appear there, and
several seconds later, WSCommCntr1.exe appears too, but the program does
not appear on the desktop - nothing more happens. If I keep clicking the
file name, I keep getting many more instances of sketch.exe in the Task
Manager. So it is not ignored, and is not an association problem, and it
sees the start, but it just will not run. This problem is true the first
time too, immediately after rebooting - doesnt start.
2. Resetting the file association with Open With does not help. Yes, all
other file type clicks work fine in other programs, JPG and PDF for example.

If at a commnd line prompt, if I type
" \Program Files\autodesk\autosketch9\sketch" \attach\test1.skf
then it starts and opens the file without event, as it should. Works fine.
That would seem the same parameters to me as a file name click, but it is
not the same somehow.

It will not work if I double click the file name. Somehow that is different
(same file). It hangs somehow, without completing the start, and without
blowing away. The window never becomes visible.

If I just double click on Sketch.exe itself, it starts fine, but of course
without a file.
And again, opening the file from the AutoSketch File - Open menu always
works fine.

I have removed it and reinstalled it a couple of times (rebooting first),
with no difference. It installs easily, registers easily, no problems,
other than it wont start from an Explorer file name click. Works fine in
all other respects.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Launching AutoSketch by double-clicking a file from Explorer is a complete P.I.T.A.....it scrambles ALL your docked Toolbars. I don't know why....it also happens in QuickCAD 8.

I can't help you with why you can't even do that though.

I recall years ago I had the same issue, not with
AS, rather with a photochop program and W-98.

For the life of me I can't remember even if I
corrected the problem. Maybe I stopped using the
program, or I cleaned the registry. I may even
have re-installed W-98 over a previous install.

This doesn't happen with XP-Pro, at least not at
this writing.

The only thing that occurs is to try a registry
cleanup, if you dare. You can always restore to
previous settings, XP will mark a registry
cleanup. You can get various programs to do this
from the net. I use Tuneup, FWIW. You might as
well do a disc Cleanup and Defrag just for the
hellovit. Couldn't hurt.

I understand your frustration though, if that helps.

Thanks, that does work. But others tell me their copy works by double
clicking the file name, so I've been puzzled what is wrong with my system.

Double click always fails, but on rare occasion, my effort gets one first
error box that says
Can't open library D:\Program
Files\Autodesk\AutoSketch9\Symbols\_DoorPlan.SLB
Thereafter no message box. I get a new Sketch.exe in Task Manager, but no
more.

However that path is correct, and the File Open menu opens it with this same
library open.

This has been an ongoing intermittent issue for me since Version 6.0.

At the moment everything is working fine and I can launch a file by
"double-clicking".

I suspect that it is a DDE timing issue.

The standard AS file association uses DDE to launch the file. I have had some
success in the past by deleting the file association and then using Windows
to create a 'new' association. Right-click and select 'Open with' and browse
for the AS executable.

An uninstall/reinstall has also worked.

Give it a try, and good luck.

I must have some flakey Windows XP problem (however all other associations
work OK). I noticed that this one went to D:\Program
Files\Autodesk\AutoSketch9\Sketch.exe /dde

but most others have "quotes" around the path. So I try to edit this one,
but it will not save it. No matter what I do to edit it, the next open
shows the old way again. In fact, I cannot delete it, it will not go away.
I have tried uninstall/reinstall, same thing.

It's OK I guess, it works fine except for doubleclicking a file name to
start it.
