Gaming mouse - increase productivity?

Hi,

I have seen studies show that a second monitor can increase productivity by 30%.

Has anyone came across any studies which demonstrate that a mouse with additional customisable buttons (e.g. gaming mouse) increases productivity?

Failing that, if you have a gaming mouse, do you feel it has increased your productivity?

I use a Logitech G602 gaming mouse.  I don't use the extra buttons as much as I should, but I would never go back to 'standard' mouse for production.

Not a gaming mouse specifically - but certainly an aftermarket mouse as opposed to the symetrical non-sense that ships with most workstations.  I use a MX Master 2S, and definitely make use of the additional buttons. I don't think it's as dramatic as adding a second monitor but it does increase productivity somewhat.  Plus, we should only be using mice that ergonomically fit the hand (the MX series tend to fit men's hands well).

No such research/findings exist that stand up to scrutiny: are you trying to justify a corporate purchase?
Any reason you are ignoring pen/tablet and trackball options? Better computer hardware? better graphics cards? and dare I say it, better software customizations / add-ons to truly increase productivity?

Not still using Win7 and not holding on to R2016 would be good examples of productivity gains too.

>>>.... that a second monitor can increase productivity by 30%....<<<
That one smells fishy 🙂

Yes, what schroeder said. A mouse with customizable buttons (number of buttons that you'll find useful varies from person to person. Some of the true "gaming" mice out there have well over a dozen buttons and that's just not useful to me) most certainly can help to increase productivity. Absolutely no question about it. The increase probably won't be huge (like the addition of a second, or third, monitor), but that all depends on how you use the extra buttons.

I'm using a logitech m510, which only has a few programmable buttons.. but I'm left-handed, so having a ton of extra buttons designed for use on a right-handed mouse does me very little good. (or else I'd have one with a few more buttons to program. But the m510 works well enough for left-handed use)

I use a Logitech Performance MX and a 3DConnexion Space mouse.  I find that in the 3D world the Spacemouse has given me way more gain than the Logitech does, but both do contribute to my success.

Have you looked at the 3D Mice?

Gaming mouse and other better mouse has higher resolution on its movement.

If your mouse still has ball, get an optical mouse.

Old mouse could be 300 dpi and high end could be 2400 dpi or higher.

With higher resolution monitor, pointing device need higher resolution.

A good mouse will be smooth and precise.  Its movement is fast but you can still stop where you need.

I use two different mice and I love them both. I use the CADMouse from 3Dconnexion. It fits my hand very well, feels good, moves very smoothly, and has a button that opens a hub to add commands. It is extremely comfortable physically. I also use a Logitech gaming mouse (not with me right now and I don't remember the name) that has several programmable buttons, is wireless and has a wire (I typically leave it plugged in). It's a great size and fits my hand very well. Works great, has a back button, adjustable scroll wheel. I can't say how much productivity would increase with a programmable mouse but I know it helps. Even if all you do for AutoCAD use is add a button that toggles F3 and/or F8. I find these functions to help quite a bit. I have also added a button to open the osnap window. Clicks that you do often that keep you from taking your hand off of the mouse to type help out quite a bit. I recommend getting one.

I use a Logitech 848nm and love it. It's a wired mouse with a few programmable buttons. I tried a couple of wireless mice, but didn't like the lag in reaction time. I have 3 of the buttons programmed for: Save, Esc and Delete. This definitely speeds up my production, how much? who knows, but helping others using a regular mouse drives me crazy having to find the appropriate key on the keyboard. Barbaric!

Hope this helps

Jim

I use a Razer Naga Left handed version as well left handed, as I also game most things are usually dual purpose.

In partnership with the naga I use a logitech G13 gaming pad, firstly because I was constantly reaching all the way across the keyboard to reach the esc key with my right hand.

The naga I have it set up with 0-9 decimal and delete, and the gamepad set up so that the most common commands are easy to reach.

The naga goes up to 8200dpi but I only tend to keep it around the 6000mark, this allows rapid movement around a 24" monitor with around half an inch movement, but with the additional buttons, can easily reduce that or increase depending on settings.

I spent the money for a naga at home and one for work, on windows without the software installed the dpi up and down buttons work as forwards and back when in windows explorer, really useful for jumping between folders.

Strangely I hold the mouse differently for Autocad when compared to gaming, this means that whilst the side buttons are easy to use for drawing they arent for gaming.

Hopefully that makes sense?

Yes. Immensely.

I programmed the thumb button for the Escape key, and use it so much it feels funny to hit it on the keyboard.

Two other buttons are programmed for align and move (both I use often).

I have a 3DConnnexion mouse I dig, but it didn't work well with Revit. I'll need to try it again.

Respectfully, John

PS I couldn't imagine not using a second monitor.

I changed to a Logitech G600 which gives me about 35 commands at my fingertips, I review the mapping every so often to make sure I use all of them. I combine that with a space mouse pro for which I do not use the programmable buttons nearly enough. I would never go back, it's so much faster to do all my common tasks, measure, display datums, show/hide relationships change the selection filter etc

Copy, pase, ctrl, shift, delete and escape are also mapped to my mouse.
Not sure how much it increases my productivity but after a little use to remember the buttons it's amazing and I highly recommend getting a mouse with as many buttons on as you can.

Used for a few years with Creo and now Inventor 2019

Like with pretty much all 3rd party peripherals with additional useful functions you will need to install the logitech software then allocate the keys you want to them.

I use both the Razer Naga left handed and the Logitech G13 macro pad and to do anything custom they require their software installed.

I know the Roccat Ryos MK FX keyboard saves a certain range of custom settings to it, for example being left handed i relocated the ESC to Insert.

Hopefully that makes sense?

I also have such a gaming mouse, and the same as it was written, I don't use the extra buttons as much as I should. Still, I can argue that it really increases performance and improves performance in the game. Honestly, I would never return to a standard mouse. Anyway, I consider that the main thing for good gaming is a powerful processor and high-quality screen. Some months ago, I ordered ASUS VP28UQG 28" from https://www.bestgaminglaptops.co.uk/best-budget-gaming-monitor-uk-under-100-200-300/, and I remained very pleased with it. Indeed, I should do it much earlier; the image quality is entirely different.

I have a gaming mouse that features DPI, recently though I’ve been wondering whether such a thing as gaming keyboard exists. So I started the search and, finally, found it. Anyway, I consider that the main thing for good gaming is an excellent mouse and a good mechanical keyboard.  I don't use the extra buttons as much as I should, though. Still, I can say that it really improves the performance and improves the game's control a lot.

yes, I have Zelotes C1-2 and a Razer Trinity with the 12 side buttons, trivial things, like copy, paste, move, opening menu, close menu, esc and many other functions, I have buttons per application (mouse profiles) and works like charm, my right hand is more than just to point and click, once you used it for a while it becomes second nature, I don't know in terms of productivity percentage, but let's me avoid moving my hand from mouse to keyboard, which is a waste of time when you are doing a lot of point and click and navigating menus.
