This project embraces the existing grid structure of San Diego while rethinking its core principles to create a more sustainable, community-focused environment. The design prioritizes human-scale urban fabric with safe streets for pedestrians and cyclists, fostering a connected and livable neighborhood. With 27% of the site dedicated to green spaces, the integration of parks and tree-lined streets cools the surroundings and improves the microclimate, addressing climate challenges.
Mixed-use buildings activate the street level with commercial spaces, while residential and office areas above enhance the vibrancy of the quarter. Landmark hotels serve as visual anchors, enriching the skyline. The design balances privacy and accessibility, creating inward-facing residential blocks for a secure atmosphere and open office spaces to invite a range of users.
Using advanced tools like Forma Sun Hour and noise analysis, the placement of buildings maximizes sun exposure and shields the inner site from noise pollution. Low building heights facilitate natural cooling by allowing wind to move heat towards the sea, while trees protect streets from harsh winds, enhancing pedestrian comfort. This project reimagines San Diego's grid, addressing modern challenges while staying rooted in the city’s urban fabric.
