EXPRESS TOOLS: Use the TORIENT Command to Rotate Text Objects Including Attributes

Contributed by:

TORIENT.jpg

The command I'm sharing with you today is TORIENT. This command can be used to rotate Text, Mtext, and even Block Attributes to a specified rotation angle. This command is an Express Tool and is not currently available in AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD for MAC, or AutoCAD for Web.

In this image, there is an Mtext object used to label a building (BUILDING OFFICE). The text needs to be rotated around the insertion point to match the rotation of the building as shown in the second image.

1. Press the ESC key at least three times to clear the current selection set.

The rotation of the selected text objects will update based on the rotation of the two points selected.

 ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:

  • While the ALIGN and ROTATE commands can be used to get a similar result with a single text object, only the TORIENT command will rotate multiple objects around their individual insertion points.
  • Editing the rotation angle of multiple selected objects can get a similar result as the TORIENT command, but only if you know the desired rotation angle to an appropriate level of precision.
  • The insertion point of the text object or attribute is important. Notice the result of rotating the block attributes in this image. The insertion point is Middle Center for all of the attributes shown in the image.

Thank you!

Great post! It has everything anyone would need to know about the command. You describe it, show how to use it step-by-step, and explain how practical differences from similar functions.
