i have made a new custom part with a new block with new unique block name. then used PlantPartConvert to add ports. i made a new custom catalog item with unique description and placed it in the spec. it shows up in the tool palette but the old part is inserted. i tried adding the new part in a drawing which has no instances of the old part and it works. it will be very time consuming to remove all the existing old parts from the drawing just to insert the new part.

Plant 3D creates a new block name for each spec item. You can copy and explode one of the blocks and redefine it as shown in attached video to change the geometry and it will apply to all spec items of the same size. After you fix one drawing, you can still use Designer Center to fix the others. Copy the redefined block(s) to a new drawing, change the block name in the new to the same as the target drawing block (if it's not the same), and redefine the block in the target dwg from the new dwg.
