Why doesn't the automatic generation of P&IDs occur from the 3D design? Wouldn't it be better to automatically generate P&IDs from the 3D drawings?

Hi,

An interesting thought, but unfortunately difficult to realise in practice.

For existing facilities which have out-of-date or no existing P&IDs then being able to produce a P&ID from an as-built 3D model would be useful but, from experience, this is not quite as straightforward as it might first appear.

For a new or updated facility would you complete the 3D model before you have your process documented?  Real world, you're more likely to produce both in parallel although the P&ID really should be signed-off before the 3D model can be completed.

As for linking the two together, that's a whole new world of change management and control.

Just my opinion.
