Yes, technically you would be "drawing twice". You have to place the 3D steel member and then draw a "dumb" line on top of it. But as you are building your model this step is minimal extra work to get the end result you are looking for. There is also the feature where you turn a line into a steel member and it retains that line. So like I said it really is minimal extra work.
What Ryan said above is correct, however I do not think he is understanding what I am telling you. He is referring to how the actual 3D model is rendered. You CAN manipulate the output of the orthoview to ONLY show the 2D lines. Place your 3D steel members on a separate layer from the line. When you go to generate your orthoview and want a stick drawing turn off your 3D steel and leave the line layer on. Now it will only output those lines.
I have attached some screen shots.
In "Shot 1" you can see the 3D model with the 3D steel member in grey. At the TOS is a yellow line. Note that the line is backed up from the connection point.
In "Shot 2" you can see the output of the orthoview as a stick drawing. Note how the lines accurately represent the steel connection. This is what I am referring to in previous posts. You will need to play around with the offset distance to get the orthoview output to be how you like.
