Modelling of Electrical equipment in autocad plant 3d

We are Engineering consultants involved in the execution of medium sized Oil and Gas Projects. We use Auto Plant 3D for piping modelling.

 

However please advise if Buildings and Electrical equipment/components (cable trays/light fittings etc) can also be modelled on auto Plant 3D.

 

We also understand from other users that the above Buildings and Electrical parts can be done on REVIT and then the models can be integrated.

 

Please advise which of the above options is a better option.

Hi,

Electrical components / any other equipments can be modeled in plant 3d as an autocad object. But in case of extracting BOM or anyother related will not be helpful in this method. However i would recommend to do the Building, Electrical/HVAC to be in the Revit. Once done in revit it is capable to integrate both together

Plant3D is AutoCAD-based and Revit is not.  It's not as easy as just "integrate them together".  If you need one to be in the other it will not be a direct load - there will be file conversion and they will be non-intelligent in the other system.  Navisworks Simulate and/or Manage will be essential to coordinate between the two platforms.

I've found the REVIT cable tray feature pretty nice, and it would be possible to do take-offs and schedules if you wanted (very handy and fast in FEL or FEED phases for estimating).  Although my group is focused on structures (which we build in REVIT), it's often quicker to add the cable tray in REVIT and include that in our exports to .DWG  as a "request" or "suggestion" to the I&E group about placement - as they are usually not all that focused on routing as much as they are on design and schedules. 

 

Everything you build in REVIT is easily exported to a 3D .dwg file to be used as an x-ref by anyone in the design team using AutoCAD (Cadworx in our case for Piping).  It's not really that difficult, and setting up particular 3D export views can allow you to export different parts of the project or different things - like cable tray, to different 3D models in .dwg format.  At least one of the guys in our group uses a project parameter and filtering to auto-generate 3D views for equipment foundations and steel associated with major areas or units, then exports those views separately to accommodate AutoCAD's 3D viewing file size limitations.  That same Unit parameter is used to filter material take offs for each area/unit.
