Custom Part Incorrect scale

Hi All,

 

 

I've created a new a new valve for my libary, but when I insert it, it displays at the wrong scale although the port locations are correct. 

 

In the image below you can see the large blue valve (selected), but the glyphs for connections and orientation are well inside that shape. Those glyphs are in the correct location, but the actual valve model is much much larger. 

I've deleted, purged and re-created this model a few times, checking model, project and insert units are all correct, but it keeps doing the same thing.

For reference, I added the source block in directly (rather than converting it and inserting it) - You can see that model in the bottom of the image - at the correct scale.

 

Any suggestions????

Dear @gerrardhickson ,

 

please check the drawing units from your 3D files to your project settings - these must be identical. Imperial to Imperial, Metric to Metric.

 

this problem has been dealt with very often in the P3D forum. please use the search function in the forum.

Thanks for the reply. Rest assured I searched. Some posts indicate a similar problem, but the resolution hasn't worked. Appreciate your feedback.

 

Insunits in both (source and destination) is 4

Have I missed something?

 

Note that in my case the glyphs for "continue piping run" etc are the correct scale - only the graphic for the valve is the wrong scale. Surely if it was a units problem they would be consistent?

@gerrardhickson  When I add a custom component to the spec I have the same problem. To solve it I do the following:

 

1- Before transforming the component into a block, I use the scale command and set the value 0.03937 (equivalent to 1 / 25.4).

 

2- I create the block and then put the doors and save the dwg.

Thanks for the reply. 

That can't be the proper solution, but that's a simple work around. I'll try that and hope for a more official fix long term.

Ok, so I've explored this a few dozen times, and found many ways NOT to solve the problem.

But I finally had success and it seems to be solved using this workflow:

 

  • Use PLANTPARTCONVERT to create the ports in the correct location
  • Then scaled the 3Dsolid only (left the port glpyhs alone) as suggested by Tilapa5,
  • Deleted the XML and PNG files
  • Then used PLANTPARTCONVERT again to redefine the XML and PNG files.

Afterwards, my source DWG looks like this: 

Note the two port glyphs far away from the actual port model.

I can't explain why this would work - the XML and PNG files don't seem to contain any related info, but it didn't work if I didn't do this.

 

I also had to purge the models each time I made a new attempt at updating the model otherwise it would just copy in the previous attempt.

 

Still hoping for a more efficient process.

Typically metric. I don't know whether it matters, but this project is mixed metric.

Dear @gerrardhickson ,

 

the problem lies in the step file.
This comes from the imperial drawing units.
After the import explode the block.
change the drawing units to "mm" and scale the entire 3D model with Varia by 25.4.
Now you can create again with Block and continue working with PLANTPARTCONVERT to create a new valve.
That's how it worked for me.

Interesting find - Have a look at the DWG file I linked. The block units in that are millimeters... not inches. I had previously exploded the step file already.

 

Could you replicate the problem using the DWG file?

I have the same issue as You.

The easiest resolution for me is to make sure that the DWG file that contains the block has the same units as the Catalog (Imperial/Metric). As @h_eger said, the units must be consistent.

My Plant 3D Project is in Mixed Metric and I had to add imperial custom parts.

So I created the custom part in a separate dwg with an Inch/Imperial unit. Convert it to Block. Used PLANTPARTCONVERT and determine the ports' position.

Or if you have an existing parts model in whatever units it is, just create a new DWG with the same units as the catalog, then copy the content to your new DWG, explode, purge (if needed), scale as needed, convert to Block, and then followed up with PLANTPARTCONVERT.

It works fine for me.
