Open Mechanical Desktop (MDT) files in AutoCAD Mechanical

we are not able to modify Autodesk mechanical desktop drawings in AutoCAD mechanical 2005/ 2013. I am getting error "You can not edit Autodesk Mechanical drawings in in AutoCAD mechanical". It seems our old drawings are created in Autodesk mechanical desktop. I tried to save as different format but tool is not allowing to do so. Can you please guide me how to update and modify drawings in AutoCAD Mechanical 2005 or 2013.

I am sorry you encountered this issue. The following Autodesk Knowledge Network (AKN) article explains how to convert MDT files:

Your link no longer works - it comes up with an error cannot find page

Hi Stephen,

We have removed that article as its no longer supported workflow. Please take a look at this one. Using Inventor option is the most accurate and recommended approach here,

Hi,

i had the same question regarding opening an Mechanical desktop files to autocad, i have old mechanical desktop files in 3D, to create 2D drawing pages in the same file, i am able to open mechanical desktop files, open 2D layouts in autocad but i can not export the 2D drawings in DXF or 2D autocad formats, i just need from my old Mechanical desktop files to export the 2D pages in DXFs, the previous autodesk knowledge link does not work,

Hi @benboubaker,

Thank you for posting. The Mechanical Desktop (MDT) file format is not supported in AutoCAD Mechanical, the Inventor workflow mentioned in the post by @VinodBalasubramanian above, is the recommended one.

There may be a third party product that can convert your MDT format files to a format that is supported in AutoCAD products, see the following list:

What files can AutoCAD import?
