Diameter Dimension disconnected when text is moved

I am having this odd and quite annoying glitch, where whenever I move the text on a diameter dimension, it resizes the grips on the dimension such that it doesn't appear to be dimension anything at all.

After Inserting New Diameter Dimension. After Inserting New Diameter Dimension. After Moving (Dragging) the text box of the dimension. After Moving (Dragging) the text box of the dimension.

Hi @tylers7G9HY,

This is an odd behavior. I tested this in a couple versions of AutoCAD Mechanical, but was not able to reproduce the issue.

A little extra information will help me narrow down the cause:

Which version of AutoCAD Mechanical are you working in?

How many files is this occurring in?

Can you provide one for testing?

Do you have any 3rd party add-ons installed?

All the best,

I have attached a sample File. It appears this issue is related only to 3d Shapes. The issue occurs with view #1 & #2 only, which have 3d objects in model space that are being dimensioned in paper space. View #3 has a 2d object in paper-space with dimensions in paper space. View #4 has a 2d circle in model space with the dimensions in paper space. I left everything at a 1:2 scale to see if that was causing any issues.

To recap, the issue is when clicking on the grip to move the text, the dimension arrow disassociates from the circle being dimensioned (As I showed in a screen shot in my original post)

Hi @tylers7G9HY,

Thank you for sharing the file, it helped me understand better.  I did test your dimensions and I do see the same issue you are.

I originally did not see the issue when I tested it because I was using Power Dimensions instead of the standard AutoCAD dimensions (DIM). AMPOWERDIM commands are considered smart dimensions and associate with the part they are dimensioning. I will be looking into this further as I am seeing the same issue in core AutoCAD with your file, so this may be a suitable work around in the mean time.

The AMPOWERDIMs are available from the Ribbon under the Annotate tab.

All the best,

Hi @tylers7G9HY,

I had a chance to run some more tests and have reached out to my team for clarification.  I did observe that  dimensions in layout space are placed appear to be placed on the primary XY plane (usually Z=0), however, the nodes for the dimension are placed on the chosen geometry which may be above or below the XY plane (see screen shot below).

3D nodes.JPG

When rotating the text position by its node, the arrows appear to disconnect, I suspect this is because it is rotating on a 3 dimensional circle. I understand AMPOWERDIMs treats 3 dimensional objects in layout space as flat, so it places all dimensions and their respective nodes on the primary plane of the 3D object selected rather than the geometry selected.

For best results, the AMPOWERDIM command will associate appropriately for your view. For a circular shape like this, choose Radius then Diameter and you should no longer have issues with your dimensions becoming disconnected.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
