Problem connect to excel spreadcheet

I'm experiencing strange problem with connection to excel spreadsheet.

It seems that it is not possible to create connection to excel files which is outside(some network drive) local computer.

I'm connecting through ODBC provider, this seems only way how to connect to excel. When trying to connect same file in local disk then It's working, but when trying to connect same file from outside local computer then it is not possible to create connection, i'm getting error during .udl file generation.

Also there is not possible  to drag and drop excel  files directly to Task Pane, i'm getting always error "Invalid workspace file format:".

Does anybody else having same problem?

Excel i'm using is 2013 64bit, Map 3d is also 2017 64 bit.

Hi,

which os does your workstation have and which os does the server have?

Have you tried to save the XLS in an older format?

What happens, when you double click (in Windows explorer) onto the XLS-file on the server ... Excel starts and shows the file ==> do you now get the Excel security bar with the question to enable/activate the sheet for editing? If so you have policies set to not see your server as save storage place (Windows setting).

Op system is WIN 7 64 bit.

Yes i saved xlsx to older versions, but nothing, not working.

But what you mean under security bar? Under file I have "Protect Workbook", but there I just can set password and option to "Mark as final" which makes it read-only.

Can you explain more precise what you mean:

If so you have policies set to not see your server as save storage place (Windows setting).

Hi,

>> But what you mean under security bar?

Sorry that I don't know the exact wording as I'm using German MS-Office.

What I meant is: if you download a XLSX from Internet, then open this file in Excel you get a horizontal line (below of the ribbon, above the spread sheet) with a warning or the question like "do you want to enable editing" ... I don't know what that is exactly in English.

You should see that with XLSX downloaded from Internet, you should not see that if you created the file by yourself and store that file local.

A server (by default intranet) is something between trusted (local) and untrusted (internet) and that can be controlled by policies, if a colleague creates an XLSX on your server and you open that file, do you get that warning line or not?

Hope that is more clear now.

Nope i'm not getting this warning you described.

This is the error occuring during Configure data Source when I press the button "Test Connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.Unspecified error." in Data Link Properties tab.

Alfred, but can you drag successfully excel file to Task pane? For me its not matter does the file located in local computer or some other drive in intranet.

Hi,

>> For me its not matter does the file located in local computer or some other drive in intranet.

Really? In your first message you wrote that it does matter where the file is stored, attaching from local drive works, from non-local drives not (your initial post here)

>> can you drag successfully excel file to Task pane?

Yes, I can, but not successfully at least ... after drop AutoCAD Map3D asks me for the XLS format and my Excel can't save back in that formats listed (and I don't have time now to search for tools.

Anyway, Excel is not a database and that's why I don't need that at all. If I use external data I use MS-Access files (or MS SQL Server or SQLite) and they work well.
