Object Data limit of 131 characters when exporting to shapefile

I searched the forum and found an old post talking about the limit on characters when exporting Object Data.  I have a field that has up to 200 characters and it is being truncated at 131 when I create a shapefile.  Does anyone if there is a system variable that will increase this number or another workaround?

Unfortunately it is a very old limitation of ODs !

MAPEXPORT of String OD Fields is limited to 131 characters for SHP, SDF v3, SQLite, MIF-MID, TAB  ...

This crazy limitation has never been corrected !! The right value would be 255 ...
