Importing ASCII point files

I am a novice learning how to work with survey data.  Please advise.

I used a point file and tutorial for importing ASCII point files from this Autodesk website.  I created new drawing, create new data store and import file but this error was given:

Get the same error as you when using the Survey Tab and tools. However using the mapimport command did bring the points in ok.

Hi K,

Welcome to the Autodesk Forums.

In Map 2016 it works OK for me. (I don't have 2017.) What Point File Format and Coordinate System did you select?

Mapimport under Insert tab gave more errors.  Repaired Autocad Map 3D 2017 student version.  Mapimport worked after repair and I was able to import ASCII points.  Although I still can not import using the survey tab.

Dave Stoll,

I used PENZD (space delineated) Point File Format and UTM83-11 Coordinate System.  I was able to import the PENZD file using Mapimport under the insert tab although I still can not import ASCII points in the Survey tab of the task pane.

K,

Here's a ScreenCast I made. The points don't land within the limits of the UTM83-11 Coordinate System, so either they are not PENZD (Maybe PNEZD?) or they belong in some other Coordinate System.

I tried to import those points using survey data store point import and also mapimport and its working, I  tried different coordinate systems and also  different formatting options: PENZD and PNEZD. But its strange that I was not able to import those points in my home computer where I have same 2017 MAP as I have in my work computer.

So I guess problem is not about CS or formatting options but somewhere else.

K,

I don't know what's going on. I don't have stand-alone Map 3D 2017 to test, so I used Civil 3D, which should work the same. I got it to work OK with stand-alone Map 3D 2016. Sometimes Autodesk breaks things in a new release. The only thing I can suggest is to get the latest Service Pack.

I ran through as in the screen cast with Map3D 2017 no service pack and it worked OK.

As for the read only error, in windows explorer check the file properties for the read only being checked as on?

I am getting the same error but thanks to Murph's answer to your post I am using mapimport.

If I use mapimport I am able to import the ascii file just fine.

Using the Task Pane > Survey Tab > Data > Import ASCII Points does not work.

Dave P,

I have Full Control of my file, so it's not a permissions issue.

Dave Stoll,

I installed the latest Service Pack.  Was not able to import points.  The Mapimport command will have to suffice.

Obviously there's an issue when not only importing points thru the Survey Data Store but also when you initially create a project or point group.  In either case you can NOT rename them without 2017 Map 3D crashing, this version includes SP 1.0.  I can rename if I select the project and select properties but no other way.  I also can NOT import points, I get the same error.  The point file is TXT, and it is NOT locked or Read Only.  The program just won't do it.  Very frustrating since I'm creating TRAINING VIDEOS for Autodesk on Map 3D.  So I can't use a work around, I must show how these features work.  Hopefully one of the Developers will see this post and get it addressed.

Heidi, the last time I was able to get the Survey Data tools to work right was in version 2006, the first year they included it in Map3D. Shorty after that version they removed the tools until they brought them in 2009/10 version.

Hi Murph.....I am somewhat lost with this same problem. All I am basically doing is trying to import some coordinates that I can then turn to point features.

I have tried the survey store and get that same error for Map3D 2017 that everyone gets, even though the Autodesk help file says its fixed in the update which I have installed.

I have tried the Mapimport, in which I see all the fields and coordinates line up in the right colums, so does decriptions etc, but when I import them, I get no errors, and no points?

I am obviously doing somewthing wrong.???  I have attached my p[oint data file.

Any help muchly appreciated.
