dimensioning

I work with AUTOCAD MAP 2004. I would like to measure a distance with a dimension command and see the value in the box below the command line. I had this feature for quite a while then lost it due to a lousy memory. Help?

What should happen is the horizontal value (as an example) should be zero until I move the cursor after I have invoked a dimension command.

Are you referring to coordinates?  the COORDS variable should be set to 2.  I don't have 2004 to check to see how to turn the coordinates on the status bar back on.  in newer versions it is a button on the far right of the status bar, first item on the list.
