Can you create a relative path for SHP files?

I am working with a client who is physically in another office. I will be doing some projects that require the use of huge SHP files and she will likely need to open and use these files in the future. We each have the same data (the large layer files) saved on our respective networks, but with different file structures.

My question is, if she needs to open one of the drawings that I have created, will she have to repath her data connections when she opens them (because we don't have the same file structure) or is there a way to create a relative path for the data connection. (My layers are all in one place, and all my drawings will access them from this location every time regardless of the project name - I don't have separate data files for each separate site.) The shp files are from the government and contain water bodies, rivers, wildlife areas, etc.

I hope this makes sense - if not, please ask and I can try to explain better.

Thanks in advance,

Liesl

Hello

As far as I know, ACAD MAP 201X doesn't support Relative Paths ...

For me it is a Dream especially with FDO drivers !!

Hi,

no, Map3D can't do that with FDO connections.

If you work a lot with this other user and multiple projects, I would start using a network drive letter that is assigned to your SHP dataset. E.g. if you are both not using drive X: then you can create a network share to use X:\SHP to your folder with the Shapes, your partner should also then use network mapping X:\SHP pointing to that folder he/she has copied your Shapes to.

Thank you Alfred, that would be the best solution, I think. I appreciate your help.

and use *.layer files in the same directory to handle theming.
