Autocad Map 3D 2016 geolocation problems

Anonymous

Hello,

I set a geolocation for a oil well in AutoCad 2016 Map 3D.  i then create some position markers with correct latitude longitude for other wells we are going to be drilling.  The online aerial map displays correctly.  I then close out of the map and reopen it and the online map does not display and all my position markers as well as the original geolocation are completely incorrect.  So, I have to go back and reset my geolocation marker and then all my other objects in the drawing, including the aerial photo, then display back to the correct position.  I close the program and the same problems reoccur.  What am I doing wrong and why is it doing this?  Frustrating........

D,

In Map 3D or Civil 3D, NEVER use any of the commands in the Location Tab. They will cause nothing but grief. That panel is only for Vanilla AutoCAD.

If your map is from scratch and you know what mapping/location system you are going to use for the project, I suggest you define the datum and projection in the drawing settings.  This will define the geolocation for the file and should remain when saved, along with any markers you create.

When using Autocad Map 3D 2014, there are no such problems. They appear in Autocad Map 3D 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Hello

As said Mr PointDump with MAP & CIVIL, No Problem with the GEOMAP Command IF the Datum / Projection has been defined BEFORE (with ADESETCRDSYS / MAPCSASSIGN) !

And It's OK from 2014 to 2018...

Hello

The above advice on the need to always use the commands ADESETCRDSYS / MAPCSASSIGN I consider " a way out of the situation". Also, I do not agree with the findings of Mr PointDump, which states that the "Geo-positioning" tab is not intended for AutoCAD MAP 3D, but is only a tool for "Vanilla AutoCAD". If this were true, then Autodesk would not include this tab in the AutoCAD MAP 3D package, and the HELP would not have information on how to correctly set the geographic position with the GEOGRAPHICLOCATION command.

Working with AutoCAD MAP 3D 2014-2018, I want to share the following.

If I take an existing drawing, open it in AutoCAD MAP 3D 2014, assign it a geographical location using the GEOGRAPHICLOCATION command, then the maps are displayed correctly. Then I close my file with saving and reopen it. Maps are displayed CORRECTLY (Fig1).Fig.1.png

                                                                                                        Fig.1

If I take an existing drawing, open it in AutoCAD MAP 3D 2015, I assign it a geographical location using the GEOGRAPHICLOCATION command, then the maps are displayed correctly (Fig.2).

Fig.2.png                                                                                                          Fig.2

Then I close my file with saving and reopen it. Maps are displayed WRONG (Fig.3).

Fig.3.png

                                                                                                                Fig.3

When you try to change the orientation of a geographic marker using the GEOREORIENTMARKER command, the message "Can not reorient Geographic Marker." Either the location or the assigned GIS coordinate system information is unavailable. Edit the location settings and try again. " (Fig.4)

Fig.4.png

                                                                                                                  Fig.4

From here we can assume that starting from 2015 AutoCAD MAP 3D stopped to see information about the geographical position of the drawing when the file was opened.

That's is not just PointDump's opinion but quite a few of the Map3D and Civil3D users. As for it still being on a tab in the ribbon and not made it inactive, it's easier to tell users not to use it that rewrite the code just for map/civil3d.   There's a few commands and functions in "Vanilla AutoCAD" that do not work properly beside the GEOGRAPHICLOCATION tool.

Hi,

the warning is correct, whenever you use GEOGRAPHICLOCATION and you do anything with the marker-object in that command you can't combine GIS-data from different sources and/or coordinate systems. The display of the BingMaps data will always be ok, but try to add a SHP dataset (with coord-system defined in PRJ) and your imaginary will not fit to the SHP content in terms of position.

When using Map3D (or CIvil3D) then please use GEOMAP to avoid conflicts of coordinates. When using plain AutoCAD, then the user can work with GEOGRAPHICLOCATION.

I'm experiencing a similar problem in Civil 3D '18. I've defined a coordinate system in the drawing settings (CA83-VF), and this setting remains unchanged after re-opening a drawing. However, anytime I save and close a drawing, the next time I open it, bing imagery is a few feet off (3'-10'). If I try adjusting the location, or using any location tools, I receive the warning/error:
"Cannot reorient Geographic Marker.
Either the location or the assigned GIS coordinate system information is unavailable. Edit the location settings and try again."
I've verified the coordinate system is still set in drawing settings, and the location marker still appears on the map. What's going on here?

... not just PointDump's opinion but quite a few of the Map3D and Civil3D users ...

My previously used statements on the AutoCAD method:

  1. "Confusing at best"
  2. "To be avoided like the plague"

We hated it so bad, we came up with an alternative for AutoCAD users (below).
